* Français Littérature, Dominique Rincé, Nathan éditeur, 2007

* For Honors students: Poil de Carotte by Jules Renard (provided by the instructor)

* Recommended: A French dictionary (see WSU bookstore)

Major Topics:

The development of reading and written comprehension skills:

1. Vocabulary build-up

2. Practice of literary terminology and techniques learned in French 223

3. General comprehension of a literary piece

4. Individual and group literary analysis: how to write about literature in French

5. Acculturation through literary material

Course Coverage:

·  Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss each text assigned. In-class activities will involve regular pair/group work.

·  Students will work through the section “Observation et Analyse” found after each text in pairs or in groups to gain insights relating to content and form. The group responses will be periodically turned in for a grade.

·  Assignments will consist of short interpretative essays based on more synthetic questions found at the end of each “Séquence”. These will often use literary terms learned in French 223 and found under the literary glossary p. 470-75. Dates for each due assignment appear on the calendar below. An instruction sheet and grading rubric are posted on Blackboard under “Course Documents”.

·  Students will be asked to write a FABLE at home on a theme of their choice based on various fables studied in this course. Instructions and an example will be provided and discussed.

·  Assignments, pair/group work, attendance, participation and the creative writing project will determine your course grade.

·  Honors students will write an additional essay on a short story taken from Le Petit Nicolas. A detailed instruction sheet will be distributed.

Grading:

Individual Assignments 30%

Pair/Group Work 30%

Creative Writing Piece 20%

Attendance & Participation 20%

Academic Honesty:

* Academic honesty is essential for any community of scholars. All graded student work must be that student’s original work. If the instructor becomes convinced by either the student’s actions or by the work itself that it is not original, the instructor may take action as severe as recording a grade of F, explaining why the action was taken.

* A standard of honesty, fairly applied to all students, is essential to a learning environment. Students abridging a standard of honesty must accept the consequences; penalties are assessed by appropriate classroom instructors or other designated people. Serious cases may result in discipline at the College or University level and may result in suspension or dismissal. Dismissal from a College for academic dishonesty constitutes dismissal from the University. (WSU Student Handbook)
