JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE OF THE POST

To provide leadership and strategic direction to Northampton Volunteering Centre (NVC) –

To ensure that NVC delivers a broad spectrum of effective support to local voluntary and community organisations; promotes and develops volunteering and community action; and ensures high quality delivery of its own direct services and projects.

To work with the Board of Trustees of NVC to develop new approaches to ensure sustainability for NVC’s services, including activities which generate income and collaborative working with other similar organisations.

To ensure that the performance and profile of NVC is maintained at a high level and that the organisation generally acts as an example to other third sector organisations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT

·  Leading strategic development and planning for the organisation – through the ongoing review of key strategic documents.

·  Identifying opportunities for growth and change and working with the NVC Board of Trustees to examine and implement these accordingly

·  Financial planning and management (in conjunction with the Treasurer and other Board members)

·  Identifying and securing funds and other resources from traditional sources as well as exploring new sources of income generation to secure the future sustainability of the organisation

·  Collaborating and negotiating with partners and funders across all sectors

·  Representing Northampton Volunteering Centre at a strategic level and making a significant contribution to the development of the voluntary sector in Northampton and across the county.

·  Establishing and maintaining awareness of external and internal influences on the direction of the Volunteering Centre.


MANAGEMENT

·  Overseeing the operational management of the Centre, as an LIO and the delivery of all its services

·  Directing the internal running and administration of NVC in accordance with agreed policies and procedures and developing and updating these procedures

·  Leading and directing a small senior management team who oversee the effective delivery of services and projects

·  Taking responsibility for management of day to day accounting, ensuring probity and transparency and following a regular reporting procedure to Board members

·  Overseeing performance management - ensuring proper monitoring and evaluation of work, in line with individual funders’ requirements and including the production of an Annual Report

·  Managing or overseeing the management of paid staff, and volunteers in line with legal requirements and good practice

·  Ensuring that there is a positive culture within the organisation which reflects a commitment to quality, equal opportunities and diversity, the continuous improvement of services and therefore engenders trust amongst all stakeholders

·  Supporting and advising the NVC Board of Trustees to enable it to carry out its legal and constitutional responsibilities as a registered charity, company limited by guarantee and employer etc.

·  Acting as Company Secretary

·  Leading and contributing to the risk management process along with senior staff and Board members

POSITIONING AND PROMOTION

·  To ensure that the high profile and reputation of the organisation is maintained and developed. This will include promotional activities, networking and sustaining well established links in a variety of arena, with relevant partner organisations at local, regional and national level.

·  Establishing and maintaining an awareness and understanding of local and national authorities’ policy decisions and agenda, as well as future developments that affect the position of NVC.

PERSONNEL

·  To support and supervise (directly and indirectly) the work of paid staff and volunteers and to ensure that all staff are properly trained and supported in their roles through established management techniques.

·  To ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place and that they are implemented and regularly reviewed and revised, to protect the interests of paid staff, volunteers, users, Board members and others.

·  To take responsibility for ensuring that the organisation carries out its legal duties with particular regard to employment practice and health and safety.

·  To establish and maintain an ethos within the organisation which is people centred and features a strong commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity.

DIRECT SERVICES

·  Overall responsibility for the effective provision of (any) direct services, including recruitment, training, support of volunteers, administration, promotion, funding negotiations etc.

·  To take a strategic and pro-active approach to the development and maintenance of direct services, taking into account the changing nature of the organisation, the Strategic Plan and the external environment.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Northampton Volunteering Centre Board of Trustees

HOURS: 37 Hours per week, some evening and weekend work is necessary, no overtime is payable.

A time off in lieu scheme operates.

PLACE OF WORK 15 St. Giles Street, Northampton

SALARY: £38961 - £42513

HOLIDAYS: 20 working days per annum plus Bank Holidays and concessionary days. Increasing by 1 day for each year of continuous service up to a maximum of 10 years giving a maximum total of 30 days holiday

PROBATION PERIOD: Six months

A pension scheme is available to which NVC contributes up to 5% of gross annual salary as a matched sum
