“Keeping it in the Target Language”

(a Central States Extension Workshop)

There is much debate about the use of the target language and first language in the world language classroom. How much target language will maximize language development? When should the first language be used and how often? Studies have reported higher language proficiency for students in addition to higher intrinsic motivation for learning a
foreign language, lower attrition and greater appreciation of language learning when target language use is standard classroom practice. Classroom strategies and examples designed to optimize and expand target language use in the classroom will be described and illustrated. Classroom teachers who use target language exclusively in the classroom will share best practices while involving participants actively in learning tasks and strategies.

How can I assist in making the attainment of the Seal of Biliteracy an achievable goal for ALL Illinois students?
