Motivate!

Biodata

Des O’Sullivan MA (Cantab), PGCE, DipTEFLA

Having graduated with a Masters degree in French and German from the University of Cambridge along with Education qualifications in English Language Teaching from the University of London and from International House in London, I have spent more than 30 years working with children, teenagers and adults, helping them to learn English (and occasionally French and German).

In addition to working as a teacher and a teaching and management trainer, I have also worked as a writer and co-writer, an editor, a publishing project manager and a publisher. Over the years I’ve had the good fortune to work with all the major British ELT publishers including Macmillan Education, Oxford University Press (UK and US), Cambridge University Press (UK and US) and Pearson. I have taught at all levels in France, Egypt, Spain and England, and I retain a (rusty) knowledge of French, German, Spanish and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic.

As I move through the second half of my career, I feel most grateful for my many years in English Language Teaching. Through my work I have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know people from all over the world. I still maintain that the more languages I acquaint myself with (even if badly!), the closer I am to becoming a true citizen of the world. I hope you still share my enthusiasm!

Abstract

Title: Motivation in English Language Teaching

The alarm clock goes off with a sleep-destroying scream. It’s Monday morning again, and you and your students will soon be facing each other across the battleline of desks. You (and they) could decide to roll over and surrender to a duvet-cocooned sleep, but you don’t (and they don’t). Dutifully you all make your way to the English class.

What gets you (and them) out of bed in the morning? What lights your fire (and theirs)? What motivates you to do something you might not always feel like doing?

In this half-day animated and participative teacher training workshop, seasoned ELT practitioner, Des O’Sullivan, will look to explore some basic principles of human motivation and will derive down-to-earth techniques for improving motivation in teaching and in learning. He will use Motivate!, the new four-level secondary course (A1+ to B1) from Macmillan Education, to illustrate some of his points.

Come on, don’t hesitate. Just Motivate!

Handouts

There will be a small number of handouts for the courses, but they won’t be ready for another few weeks. I expect most handouts to be the key slides from my PowerPoint presentations. Crucially, course participants will definitely need copies of the newly published Motivate! Student’s Book Level 1.
