JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Biology Stockroom Associate
REPORTS TO: Biology Stockroom Manager
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Biology StockroomAssociate assists the Biology Stockroom Manager with his or her tasks relating to support for the Biology and Biology-related (Neuroscience and Environmental Studies) teaching and research laboratories, including purchasing, inventory management, routine maintenance and repair of equipment, handling of chemicals, supervision of student workers, and managing the FNSM animal facilities.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities will be a subset of the responsibilities of the Biology Stockroom Manager, as skills allow and time permits.
Stockroom
- Assist with organization and management of the main and satellite Regents Hall stockroom and storeroom inventory and electronic inventory in the Quartzy system.
- Work with the Chemical Hygiene Officer to ensure that chemical waste material is properly handled and disposed of, and that St. Olaf Chemical Hygiene Plan requirements for labeling, storing, and handling chemicals are met.
- Assist with the routine inventory and checking of equipment in teaching and research spaces, routine maintenance and repair of equipment, and coordination of these efforts with the Physics Technician as needed.
- Assist with training and supervision of the student workers such as teaching assistants as needed.
Ordering and Account Management
- Serve as back-up purchasing agent for the Biology department.
- Maintain detailed records of purchase and billing transactions.
Animal Facilities and Care
- Be trained in animal care guidelines through Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and serve on the St. Olaf IACUC (St. Olaf College will support this training).
- Assist with management of the Regents Hall Vivarium and various aquaria; help to train and supervise the student workers taking care of these areas.
Teaching and Research Laboratories
- Work with the Biology Stockroom Manager to provide support for Biology faculty as needed for their courses and in their research laboratories; this may include gathering items for laboratories, helping with laboratory set-up and take-down, and running local errands for supplies.
- Provide similar course support for other FNSM faculty, particularly in Neuroscience and Environmental Studies.
- Work with the Biology Stockroom Manager to assist Biology faculty in the management of the greenhouse, the aquatics room, the growth chamber room, and the field equipment rooms.
SUPERVISORY
RESPONSIBILITIES: Training and supervision of student workers.
CONTACTS: Biology Stockroom Manager, Chemistry Stockroom Manager, Physics Technician, Chemical Hygiene Officer, faculty (especially in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Neuroscience), FNSM Academic Administrative Assistants, students, manufacturers, and vendors.
EDUCATION:Essential: Basic background in biology and interest in science; training in safe handling of chemicals and biohazards.
Desirable: BA or BS or higher in a science field; animal care experience and training
EXPERIENCE:Essential: Demonstrated organizational, computer, and professional communication skills; demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to collaborate with others.
Desirable: 1-3 years of comparable experience in a like facility. Experience working with students; experience applying animal use and care regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Lifting according to strength and ability. Handling of compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic liquid dewars; transport of incoming orders and outgoing waste containers up to 40 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Academic science stockrooms and laboratories in Regents Hall

Term:12 months
Shift: 20 hours per week during regular business hours (8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.)
