Speech Categories
I. Solo Acting (One person only)
A. Presentations (5-10 min.)--One person acts out multiple characters
1. Humorous Presentation
2. Serious Presentation
B. Monologue (5-10 min.)--Only one character carries on conversations or acts
out scenes with imaginary characters.

2. Serious Monologue
C. Poetry (4-7 min.)--One person recites memorized poetry.
D. Impromptu Speaking (0-8 min.)—Students are given two one word or short
phrase prompts. They must select one of thechoices and then prepare and
deliver a formal speech within eight minutes.
E. Original Script (5-10 min.)—A student will present a speech that he or she
has written. The speech may be a monologue, poetry, short story, essay, or
presentation.
II. Duet Events (Two people only)
A. Duet Acting (5-10 min.)—two people have direct conversations with each
other or silent characters.
1. Humorous Duet
2. Serious Duet
B. Improv. Duet (3 sets of 2 min.)—Students are given a prompt in which they
must immediately act out a scene for 2 minutes. The first prompt is
humorous, the next is serious, and the last is humorous again.
C. Original Duet Script (5-10 min.)—Students will act out a duet they have
written and prepared themselves.
III. Group Events
A. Small Group Acting (5-10 min.)—A group of 3-5 students act out a prepared
script.
B. Chorale Reading (6-10 min.)—A group of 9-20 students present more than
one spoken selections.

I. Guidelines:
A. If you have already participated in speech for one or more years,
you may select up to two categories.
B. If this is your first year of speech, you may only select one
of the following categories: small group, duets, poetry,or
chorale. (Marked with an ** below)
C. Keep in mind that although you are making a specific request,
the speech coaches have the final say on category and group
assignments.
