COURSE OUTLINE: This course will provide the second year Radiologic Technology student and the graduate Radiographer with a basic working knowledge and common terminology of pathology as it pertains to diagnostic medical imaging. The course presents pathologies most commonly encountered in a Radiology Department. Course content will include discussion regarding disease processes; radiographic presentation of pathology; technique selection; advantages and disadvantages of various imaging modalities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course the student will have accomplished the following objectives with a total score of 73% or better.

1.  Define common terminology associated with the study of disease and describe the different types of disease classifications.

2.  Differentiate between signs and symptoms, acute versus chronic disease and diagnosis versus prognosis.

3.  Characterize different ways that cells can adapt in response to injury or environmental changes.

4.  Evaluate the anatomy of the human body systems to determine radiographic demonstration of abnormalities and identify disease possibilities.

5.  Explain the pathogenesis and etiology of diseases commonly diagnosed with the use of medical imaging.

6.  Identify appropriate indications for performing a given procedure.

7.  Propose additional imaging positions or technique adjustments that would further characterize the radiographic appearance of the pathology to improve diagnosis.

8.  Compare and contrast various imaging modalities and procedures to diagnose the pathologies discussed in the course.

9.  Classify pathologies unique to specific age groups.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME: Students will be able to identify pathologies that are common to the various body systems.

ATTENDANCE: Lack of attendance and tardiness may affect your grade. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the material covered. The RT Handbook policy states that 2 tardies can equal one absence; three absences may result in dismissal from the course.

PARTICIPATION: Participation is an essential component of the course. Arriving late, leaving

early and/or being absent may affect your grade. Sharing, cooperation, and working with others

as a team player are a vital component of active learning and an essential skill for a Radiology

Technologist.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, OR FURNISHING MATERIALS IN ORDER TO ENABLE OTHER STUDENTS TO DO SO WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Such behavior violates Section I.B.1 of El Camino College’s Board Policy 5138, Standards of Student Conduct. Anyone cheating will receive zero points for that test, exam, or assignment. Cheating of any kind is a serious breach of personal morality and an offense against your fellow students, your instructors, and the college. No Photos can be taken without permission from the instructor. You may not leave the room during the examination without permission.

STUDENT SUCCESS: As your instructor, my primary goal is your success. If you feel you may require special accommodations please meet with me by week three of the semester.

FOOD/BEVERAGES: Are not permitted in the classroom or lab. The only exception is bottled water with a cap.

LATE WORK: There will be a 50% deduction in points for every day your work is late. This is done to assure fairness to those students who complete their assignments on time. All exams that are missed due to absence must be made up PRIOR to the next class session attended – there will be a 10 % penalty for make up exams without prior arrangements with the instructor. The student is responsible to coordinate the make-up exam with the instructor. There will be no makeups for quizzes.

ASSESSMENT: This course will require a total score of 73% or better to continue on in the Radiologic Technology. The course will additionally include assessments through film identification and take home assignments. Assignments must be submitted on time for full credit.

REPEAT TESTS: All unsuccessful tests must be retaken and passed. Any test receiving a score below 73% must be retaken and passed within one week of the original test date. You may only repeat ONE exam during the course. (Original test score will be the recorded grade.) If the repeated exam is not passed, a score of 0 will recorded as the original grade.

Grading System:

MC SP 2010 (2-1-10) 1
