Louisiana Engineering Society Baton Rouge Chapter

President’s Address

By: Robert Degeyter, P.E.

As the new year begins, we reflect on the accomplishments that the LES Baton Rouge Chapter has achieved throughout the previous year and the goals that the Chapter is striving to achieve in the new year. The LES Baton Rouge Chapter provided the leadership needed on a task force to keep the Quality Based Selection process for the East Baton Rouge Engineering and Surveying Selection Board in the best interest of the engineering community and public welfare. Also, our fundraising efforts for the annual LES golf tournament and the LSU/SU student function are at record levels. All proceeds from both these functions will help fund our annual scholarships to engineering undergraduate students attending LSU and Southern. I would like to thank the engineering community for your support in sponsoring these events. The sponsorship goes a long way to help advance the academics of engineering students and enhance the engineering community in building a strong foundation for the engineering profession.

The 2007 Joint Engineering Societies Conference will be held at the River Center, in conjunction with the LOBOs Industrial Trade Show on January 17-18, 2007. The LES Baton Rouge Chapter welcomes a strong turnout for the Statewide conference. Statewide Awards will be presented at the Statewide banquet on Thursday, January 18th during the conference. Continuing education opportunities and other information are available on the LES website at www.les-state.org.

Our annual Future Cities regional competition will be held in Alexandria on January 26th. The theme for the competition this year is “Fuel Cells”. We congratulate all students and thank all volunteers for their time and effort in this worthwhile event that LES sponsors for the enhancement of students with goals toward the engineering profession. If you are interested in volunteering your services, please contact Michael Marchand at (318) 473-2100 or (318) 613-1456.

We are always in need of volunteers for our annual Mathcounts competition. This has proven to be an excellent event that our organization sponsors for the enrichment of students with high academic math skills and ambitions to the engineering profession. The regional competition date is February 9th at the Transportation Training and Education Center. If you are interested in supporting these efforts, please contact Gavin Gautreau at (225) 767-9110.

Our annual Engineering Week banquet will be held at the Baton Rouge Country Club on February 22nd during E-Week. Come and join us for a night of celebration in honoring people that have made positive contributions to the engineering profession as well as accomplishments of students with aspirations to the engineering profession. All Baton Rouge Chapter nominees for the Statewide Honors and Awards will be recognized at the E-Week banquet.
