THE BARRETT HONORS COLLEGE

At Arizona State University

Honors Parents Leadership Council July 12, 2003, Meeting

Honors Parents President Mike Wieczorek began the meeting at 9:10 a.m. In attendance were Mike and Tony Wieczorek, Phil Reckers, Shawn Kennedy, Marcy Díaz, Fran and Dave Ryan, Charlie and Cindy Shafer, Robert Laliberte, Kim Noble, Lynn Silber, and Christy Southergill.

Mike first asked Christy to present an update on collecting dues for Honors Parents. She indicated that it is complicated to require fixed dues and so we will ask for a donation to be a Barrett Booster. The suggested donation will be $20.00 for one year or $60.00 for multi-years. All present approved the donation structure. Charlie suggested that next year the wording on the application form be changed to say that donations "support the many programs in the Barrett Honors College."

Mike and Lynn then gave an update on the merchandising effort. There are 23 white polo shirts left in various sizes and they will be sold at a sale price of $20. The new polo shirts will be a wine color. Antigua, a local company in Peoria, can provide men's shirts for $13.50 and women's shirts for $12.50. Honors Parents will sell them for $25. Anton Sport, also a local company, would charge $20 to $25 depending on the embroidery. There is also a small independent company that can provide shirts for $19 each. Each company will also charge an embroidery setup fee. The T-shirts will be gray with a silkscreen logo. Anton Sport had the best quality for the price; shirts will be $4.50 to $6.50 each and a two to three week lead-time is needed. The logo for T-shirts and polo shirts will include the flaming B, the word "Barrett," and perhaps "ASU" on the sleeve or the flaming B and "Barrett at ASU."

Mike will have the prices for the window decals soon. Three sources are being considered. In addition to the new shirts and window decals, Honors Parents have 740 hats and 186 mugs remaining. The majority of those present approved selling the hats for $10 each this year and the mugs for $2 each or three for $5. Pencils will be given away with a purchase and also as part of the centerpiece. The merchandise will first be available during Sun Devil 101 and will continue to be available throughout the year.

Christy has contacted Gia Taylor, Assistant Director of Orientation and Parent Programs at ASU, to discuss ways Honors Parents can collaborate with the ASU Parents Association without losing its distinctiveness.

Mike and Christy next presented an update on Honors Parents Sun Devil 101 Activities. Christy shared the letter that was sent from her office to parents of incoming students, since Dr. Mark Jacobs does not become the dean of the BHC until August 1. Honors Parents volunteers will host a Hospitality Room inside Best C 119 on Wednesday, August 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Thursday, August 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cool drinks and "goodies" will be available and the BHC Alumni Network will provide bottles of water. A Power Point presentation of BHC pictures taken last year will play in the background. Volunteers are needed to host the room.

The Honors Parents Reception will take place on Thursday, August 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting, which is located two and a half miles from the university. Volunteers are needed for the reception beginning at 2:00 p.m. to set up and decorate for the reception. Tables and chairs are being rented for $400, and the room fee is $400 and will be shared equally by the BHC and HP. Christy's office is once more requesting donations of hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants. Music students will perform and BHC students will speak on their experiences at the BHC. Incoming Dean Mark Jacobs, Christy, Mike, and the alumni president will also speak to the parents. Members of the BHC Alumni Network Board of Directors will also be present. The dress for this event is casual. Mike would like all members of the Honors Parents Leadership Council to be present at the reception. Christy has requested a $2500 grant from Cricket Communications to help with the costs this year. In exchange they will be able to advertise their cellular service to students and parents.

This year the fall assembly will take place at the Galvin Playhouse, as Gammage Auditorium is under construction. There will be two sessions to accommodate the number of incoming students at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. All members of the HPLC are requested to attend, as incoming Dean Mark Jacobs will introduce us. Everyone will meet at the designated time for coffee and juice in the BHC courtyard and then parents and students will be escorted to the assembly as a group. HP will be able to sell merchandise in Galvin Playhouse.

Dr. and Mrs. Phil Reckers plan to host a reception for the HPLC and Dr. and Mrs. Mark Jacobs in September.

Family Weekend is October 10 to 12, 2003. In the past the college has always had the mock Human Event class. Potential ideas for additional activities that would be of interest to parents of returning students include: the ASU Arboretum walking tour, a condensed honors thesis workshop, Dr. Mike Johnson to talk about student stress, and a student study abroad seminar. Christy would like HPLC members to e-mail her regarding the programs they would prefer.

President Michael Crow has set aside $100,000 for Homecoming for the New American University. Christy will purchase a block of tickets at $12 each for parents to attend the homecoming game. Saturday morning, November 1, there will be a university Homecoming Block Party.

Additional activities for the year include the Centennial Lecture in the Carson Ballroom of Old Main on Wednesday, November 19. Honors Parents are needed to usher. There will be no book sale this year. Smoothies Saturday will be Saturday, December 13. Plans are in progress to have the December graduation reception at Monti's and the May graduation reception at the Mission Palms Hotel. Christy's office will also coordinate a letter to the few August graduates inviting them to the December reception. Mike and Christy would like to have a Phone-a-thon to reach more parents on September 13, after the first Honors Parents meeting. They feel that a personal call will get more parents involved.

Mike adjourned the meeting at 10:45 a.m.

The next Honors Parents Leadership Council meeting will be Saturday, August 2, at 9:00 a.m. at the Coffee Plantation on Mill Avenue.

Respectfully submitted,

Marcy Díaz, Secretary
