Title: Commission member

Purpose:

To contribute to the Commission overseeing the overall strategic direction of Schools Judo

Introduction:

The British Schools Judo Commission is the schools body working within British Judo Association (BJA), the National Governing Body for the sport of judo. The Commission’s role is to support the BJA in increasing participation and developing judo within schools. The Commission is also the official conduit in communicating and assisting outside agencies and organisations (including educational), providing technical advice and assistance. As a Commission they are responsible for ensuring there is safe practice within schools and work with educational establishments and organisations to ensure the sport continues to develop and evolve in schools.

Role:

We are looking for up to 3 individuals to join the British Schools Judo Commission. These may or may not have a judo background.

A panel from the Commission will appoint people who should demonstrate a knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

·  Teacher training and development

·  Marketing and sponsorship generation

·  Primary and Secondary PE curriculum expertise

·  Children and young people

·  Business experience

In order to achieve the appropriate balance of skills and experience across the Commission and to promote diversity in perspectives, work and life experiences, the Commission will consist of individuals from various disciplines and specialisms.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

a)  Support the Chair and assist in the overall governance of the British Schools Judo Commission

b)  Actively contribute to the formulation, establishment and implementation of the Commission’s strategy around schools judo development, the discharging of statutory duties and supporting the Commission in overseeing timely production of realistic plans

c)  Work with the Chair of the Commission and the BJA as a whole to assist in building good working relationships with key external stakeholders (e.g. DCSF, YST, Sport England, LEAs and other key stakeholders)

d)  Ensure that the highest ethical and professional standards are met and that high standards of corporate governance are observed at all time

e)  Monitor the delivery of planned results within your area of responsibility and report to the Commission on these results

f)  Ensure that the British Schools Commission operates within the limits of its authority and promotes close working relationships with other Commissions when needed

British Schools Judo Commission Person Specification

We are looking for a mix of people offering different skills, therefore we would ask people to consider if they hold one or more of the below skills and or knowledge;

a)  Experience of working with or in an educational environment

b)  Experience of successful leadership in an advisory or senior management role

c)  Evidence of participation in the formulation of policies and strategies within a voluntary, public or private organisation

d)  Experience in teacher training and development

e)  Experience of offering a challenging but supportive contribution on a Committee or Board

f)  Good communication skills with specific experience in influencing and negotiating within education

g)  Experience of working in partnership with a number of different organisations

General Information

Time commitment:

Commission members will be expected to attend at least 4 Commission meetings per annum, normally held in Walsall. There may be other meetings within the BJA and with external partners that Commission members may need to attend. It must be emphasised that the time commitment is negotiable and liable to variation.

Remuneration:

All roles in the Commission are voluntary but reasonable travel expenses will be paid for Commission members on official business. In all cases, mileage rates and expense rates are set by the British Judo Association.

Term of Appointments:

Appointments will be made on a two year basis and reviewed annually.
