Re: Chemical Physics Track in Chemistry
Date: March 15, 2007
We are proposing a change in the chemistry major in the chemical physics track (Program D).
The proposed changes (see next page) are required for two reasons:
1. The Physics department has not recently offered the PHY 155 (4) course, which is in the current track, and a replacement is needed.
2. The Chemistry Seminar course, CHM 195 (2), is added to satisfy the new GE requirements for integrating the major discipline and writing course within the major.
After discussion with the Physics Department last year, when a similar proposal was submitted, we have decided not to change the current requirements (other than replacing PHY 155 with another elective Physics course) and to add the 2 unit seminar course. That will increase the major total to 67 (or 68 if PHY 142/143 is chosen).
Our Program C – Biochemistry Track – already has a 67 unit requirement, and the Physics major has a 67 unit requirement, therefore, our request to increase to 67/68 is in-line with what is currently required.
Please remember that this is a track within the Chemistry major and not a new separate major and that the track has been in the major for over 10 years.
