Regular Board Meeting

April 11, 2016

The regular meeting of the Maquoketa Valley Board of Education was called to order by President John Zietlow at 6:00 p.m. in the Middle School Conference Room in Delhi, Iowa. All motions carried unanimously unless otherwise noted. Five board members were present. There were four staff and one visitor present. The agenda and the consent items were approved.

At 6:02 p.m., President John Zietlow declared this to be the time and place to hold the hearing on the proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year. The proposed tax rate is $14.69258. The documents were reviewed and there being no comments, the Board President declared the hearing closed. The motion passed to approve the budget estimate as published. A roll call vote was answered all ayes.

Prior to the book fair held in Delhi during conference in March, Audrey Moenck organized a “Coin War” in grades JK-8. The students were able to raise $1839.52. This money was used to purchase books for the Delhi library.

Our students scored well on the Iowa Assessments this year. Generally, 80% or more of students being proficient is considered a sign of healthy core instruction. We met this target at every grade level in every area, with 100% proficiency in 3rd grade math and 4th grade science.

The Board approved the low bid from Boland Recreation in the amount of $80,000 to replace the playground equipment at Delhi Elementary. The equipment will be replaced over the summer.

The Board approved the 2016-2017 membership dues to Iowa Association of School Boards in the amount of $2,514.

The Board approved the call to request for natural gas proposals.

One open enrollment request in was approved.

The following personnel recommendations were approved:

Jason Helle – resignation from Middle School Boys Basketball Coach (Contingent upon finding a suitable replacement. This is a correction from last month. Mr. Helle will not be resigning from MS Girls Basketball.)

Diane Temple – resignation from Assistant Individual Speech Coach (Contingent upon finding a suitable replacement.)

The Board approved Maquoketa Valley’s participation in the 2016-2017 Jones Regional Alternative Program.

The Board approved the proposed grade realignment proposal that was approved by the majority of the PK-3rd grade parents.

Supt. Tuetken asked the Board to begin thinking of potential nominees for the Five Star Award in recognition to an organization or individual who has gone “above and beyond” in their support for our school district. The award will be given at the graduation ceremonies held on May 18th.

The May board meeting will be held at Johnston Elementary.

The Academic Excellence and National Honor ceremonies will be held on May 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the High School commons. Baccalaureate is scheduled for May 15th at 1:30 in the High School Auditorium and the Senior Award Ceremony will begin at 3:00 in the Middle School gym.
