·  Accreditation White Paper

·  During the 15th Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Conference, two breakout sessions covered the subject of program accreditation. After hearing these presentations, many individuals felt that a focus group should be formed to facilitate discussion of emergency management standards and the process for accreditation in the future. The FEMA Higher Education Program hosted an accreditation focus group meeting on these topics on September 12-13, 2012. A white paper detailing the preliminary recommendations of the focus group was produced and is now available. White paper can be found at http://www.training.fema.gov/emiweb/edu/EMFoundation.asp

We are requesting that the program director/coordinator at each institution (one per university) review the document and then complete a survey to be accessed at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/EMGTHIED_ACCREDITATION

The findings of the survey will be presented at the 2013 FEMA Higher Education Conference and may have a bearing on if and how accreditation of higher education programs will proceed in the future.

For technical questions about the survey, please contact Jessica Jensen at .

16th Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Conference Update

16th Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Symposium is scheduled for June 3-6, 2013. Some need to know information is now posted to the Hi Ed website symposium page at http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/edu/educonference13.asp.

·  Symposium Theme: From Theory to Doctrine to Practice

·  All Symposium Applicants must have a SID number on their application. To reduce the risk of identity theft, FEMA, the National Fire Academy (NFA), and the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) are eliminating the use of the Social Security Number (SSN), where possible when applying for training. FEMA has implemented the use of a Student Identification (SID) number. You will be required to obtain and use the SID in applying for NFA or EMI courses. This number will be used in place of the SSN on your application. Read more about this new application process

·  Call for Papers/Presentations: Deadline – April 19, 2013

·  Symposium Goals and Objectives

·  Over the next few weeks I will have more information posted particularly concerning student volunteer and student presentation opportunities.

v  Training Video about Emergency Response on Tribal Lands Released

“Strength and Resiliency: Emergency Preparedness for Tribal Leaders and Program Directors—Your Roles & Responsibilities”

By Monte Fronk
Published Tuesday, January 15, 2013

The 30-minute video “Strength and Resiliency: Emergency Preparedness for Tribal Leaders and Program Directors—Your Roles and Responsibilities” came from the last 5 years that I have been hearing the same concern from tribal emergency managers who report difficulty getting enough time with tribally elected officials and/or program directors to effectively explain how to deal with emergencies on tribal lands. Unlike city or county elected officials, tribal leaders often spend a great amount of time traveling to meetings throughout the United States. Many of them spend a great deal of time at meetings with state elected officials, members of Congress as well as their staff, heads of federal agencies and other tribal leaders. They are tireless advocates for state and federal policy changes to improve the lives of their tribal members and to ensure the right to tribal self-determination is fully realized—but clearly very busy.

To read the press release in its entirety and to view the very informative video use the web links below.

v  American Journal of Disaster Medicine

What exactly is disaster medicine?

Even to practitioners, the discipline's definition can be fuzzy and somewhat confusing. If it appeared in dictionaries (which it doesn't yet), it would look like this:

dis.as.ter med.i.cine (di zas' tor med'i sin) n 1. the study and collaborative application of the professional skills of diverse medical and public health specialties to provide "crisis management" (altered standards of care) in mass casualty incidents 2. not the same as conventional medical care 3. requires a fundamental change in the approach to the care of patients in order to achieve the objective of providing the "greatest good for the greatest number of patients 4. requires knowledge of the fundamentals of disaster management, specific injury patterns commonly encountered in disasters and the ability to work as part of a multi-organizational response team

Independent and strictly peer-reviewed, guided by an internationally recognized editorial review board and accepted for inclusion in the National Library of Medicine's prestigious PUBMED database, American Journal of Disaster Medicine is designed for those of us who will find ourselves on the frontlines of a major disaster. It offers practical, real time guidance as we seek to combine emergency medical and trauma skills with crisis management and new forms of triage in the effort to save lives.
