IE 7/IE 8 security settings for Topaz/SapphirePro

Internet explorer security settings must be configured manually in order to run the Topaz/Sapphire application properly. These settings are needed on both Server and Workstation. The settings are almost the same on both machines except the trusted site address on the workstation (since it gets all the html files from the server).

Internet Explorer 7/8 for Windows XP and in Windows Vista has many security enhancements that make Internet Explorer less susceptible to spyware and malware, such as Protected Mode. In Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Internet Explorer runs in Protected Mode, which helps protect users from attack by running the Internet Explorer process with greatly restricted privileges. Protected Mode significantly reduces the ability of an attack to write, alter or destroy data on the user's machine or to install malicious code. Some browser based applications can get affected by these settings.

By default, the Internet security settings in Internet Explorer are set to protected mode: on

Here are the steps to make trusted site’s protected mode off: Set the settings as indicated in the screenshot below

1.  Open the Internet options of your internet explorer browser (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options)

2.  Go to the Security page of the Internet options dialog (as shown in the screen shot below).

3.  Select the ‘Security’ tab from the dialog box that appears, and then click on the ‘Trusted Sites’ icon. You will be able to see the Trusted Sites details.

4.  Ensure that the slider is set on the Medium secure levels or lower.

5.  Ensure that the “Enable Protected Mode” is unchecked as shown in the screenshot.

6.  Click on “Sites” button. Set the settings as indicated in the screenshot below.

7.  Type the server’s web address (for example, http://127.0.0.1) in the ‘Add this website to the zone:’ box and click on the Add button, replacing ‘127.0.0.1’ in the example above with the IP address of the Sapphire or Topaz server.

Note: If you are not able to add http://localhost in the dropdown list, uncheck “Require Server Verification (https :) for all sites in this zone”, add the web address, keep back it to the checked state.

8.  Click on “Close” to close the trusted sites dialog.

9.  Close Internet Options and Explorer to confirm the new security settings for that zone are applied.

The trusted site gets added in the trusted site zone as shown below.

Protected mode status (on or off) and zone are listed at the bottom of the browser page as shown below.
