Teen M.I.S.S.I.O.N (Making It Safe and Sober In Our Neighborhood)---Safe Communities Team of the MAGIC Collaborative

What’s the big deal about underage drinking? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, kids who drink are more likely to:

  • Be victims of violent crimes.
  • Engage in risky sexual behavior
  • Have serious problems in school.
  • Be involved in drinking related traffic accidents
  • Develop alcohol dependence

According to the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), Greene County youth age 12-17 reported higher alcohol use than neighboring counties and the state: Roughly 37% reported using alcohol within the past 30 days. Our kids are trying to tell us something. Teen MISSION strives to prevent and/or reduce the early initiation and regular use of alcohol among middle to high school youth. The MAGIC Moments Newsletter gives a complete list of alcohol-free social and recreational opportunities for youth and families. These events and activities provide healthy alternative activities that keep our youth safe and alcohol-free. It is important to promote and participate in community activities that support Our Youth. Our Neighborhood. Our MISSION.

The IU1 began studying the possibility of creating its own cyberschool. At this point Avella and Uniontown have signed on to be part of the consortium to create an online school. This project is open to all districts within the intermediate unit. Other districts are choosing to create their own cyber schools. The goal is to bring the students back home to save money and have more say over the curriculum. Students who go through the cyberschools will then receive their home district’s diploma. SRMC recently implemented a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE) that will help victims of sexual assault obtain confidential, timely and comprehensive care. To ensure the best outcome for victims beyond the care they receive at SRMC, a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is needed. The success of SART depends largely on the collaboration of all the agencies involved. This team is designed to help survivors of sexual assault from start to finish and provide them with the care, support and resources they need to get through this life-altering ordeal and move on with their lives. Kelly Fath is the SANE Program Director at SRMC. At the present time there are four certified sexual assault nurse examiners at the facility.
