Departmental Overview: / The Leisure, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is responsible for the provision of high quality leisure and cultural programs and services including but not limited to Leisure Planning, Leisure Facility Development, Community Facility and Contract Management, Leisure Programs and Activities, Cultural Events and Activities, Access for All Abilities Program, Management of Community Halls and Buses, Art Exhibition and Programs and Community Liaison and Engagement.
Position Objectives: / To provide instruction and education in swimming, water safety and survival skills to participants in a variety of aquatic programs run at Banyule Leisure Facility Management sites.

Key Responsibility Areas: / 1. Supervision
  • Supervise the classes and ensure that the aquatic programs participants act in a responsible and safe manner;
2. Program Development and Operation
  • Assist in the implementation of appropriate program standards and quality controls;
  • Instruct classes in water safety, survival skills, stroke technique and stroke correction;
  • Develop and maintain a professional and friendly relationship with all aquatic program participants and parents;
  • Provide aquatic program participants and parents with appropriate feedback and encouragement with respect to progress.
3. Administration
  • Keep accurate records of attendance;
  • Complete and distribute Achievement Certificates at appropriate times;
  • Collect and return any equipment used during the classes to the appropriate storage area;
  • Report any damage to equipment to Aquatic Programs Coordinator.

Organisational Relationships: / Position Reports to: Aquatic Programs Coordinator
Supervises:Class participants
Internal Liaisons:Other staff of the Banyule Leisure Facilities Management Team and staff of the Banyule City Council.
External Liaisons: Customers of the aquatic facilities, facility members, schools, community organisations, residents and general public.
Accountability and Extent of Authority: / Accountable to the Aquatic Programs Coordinator for the provision of safe and appropriate swimming and water safety instruction.
Under the guidance of the Aquatic Programs Coordinator, the position has the authority to develop and implement aquatic programs and run swimming and water safety classes in accordance with Austswim, Royal Life Saving Society and BLFM guidelines.
Judgment and Decision Making: /
  • Assess the ability levels of students with the purpose of recommending appropriate classes.
  • Assess students skills levels to attain progression certification.
  • Suitability of children and standards of behaviour, which are acceptable.
  • Supervision is generally in the form of pre-determined objectives and guidelines. Guidance is readily available.

Skills Knowledge and Experience for Success: / Specialist Knowledge & Skills:
Aquatic Education Instructors should have a sound knowledge of swimming instruction, stroke techniques, water safety and water education as well as resuscitation, rescue techniques and facility emergency evacuation procedures and displans.
Management Skills:
Aquatic Education Instructors must have good organisational skills, and solid program planning skills.
Good time management is also essential.
Interpersonal Skills:
Strong verbal communication skills are required in the position.
A strong customer service orientation is required in dealings with participants, parents and residents.
Sound liaison skills are required in dealings with aquatic facility staff, Council staff and management.
Qualifications: /
  • A current AustSwim Certificate
  • A current C. P. R. Certificate
  • Swim Teachers Rescue Competency which will be assessed annually
  • Current Working With Children Check

Banyule Management System: /
  • Conduct all work according to the requirements of the Banyule Management System, incorporating the Banyule Management Manual and Service Unit specific Quality and Cost Standards and procedures.

Environment: Indoor.

 Temperature 26-31oc (can be controlled).

 Adequate overhead and natural light sources.

Work Station: Small pool depth 0.7– 0.9m.

 Large pool 25m length, depth 0.9-2.1m.

 Pool divided into separate areas for different level of swimming skill/class levels.

Materials handled: Safety rail runs along edge of large pool.

 Children handled by teacher to demonstrate swimming techniques (weight reduced in water).

 Swimming aids – kickboards etc, stored in plastic buckets, maximum weight lifted approx 3-4 kgs.

Posture: Various postures required to demonstrate swimming techniques – weight supported by water.

 Standing and squatting in water.

Lower Limbs: Walking in and out of pool 3 steps with rail.

 Intermittent kneeling, squatting and standing.

Upper Limbs: Lower body into pool from side using arms.

 Supporting children in water.

 Demonstrating teaching techniques.

 Full range of movement through all upper limb planes.

Neck and Back: Neck sustained in neutral (to keep head above water).

 Weight supported by water.

Psycho/Social Demands: Continuous concentration to monitor children in water.

 6 children maximum to a class.

 Patience required to teach small children.
