Department of clinical neuroscience
APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL OF DOCTORAL EDUCATION SUPERVISOR
The expectation of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience is that any individual registered as a PhD student within the Deptartment should perceive the host group as an appropriate workplace for conduct of a doctoral education.
It is implicit in this expectation that the scientific and social environment within the host group reflects an environment in which good scientific quality, mutual respect, open communication and sound ethical practices are the norm.
It is also implicit that main supervisors in particular, and all supervisors involved with a PhD student, should understand their responsibilities and demonstrate good scientific supervision, leadership and pedagogical qualities with the aim of assisting development of the doctoral student.
With these notions of quality assurance in mind, the Department of Clinical Neuroscience will adopt a new pre-registration procedure (CNS1-2-3) as of September 1st 2013 that will be a pre-requisite for all potential supervisors wishing to:
- Apply for Karolinska Institutet KID funding for PhD students
- Apply for Karolinska Institutet Clinical Scientist Training Programme (CSTP) funding for PhD students
- Apply for any other type of PhD funding e.g. Research school
- Announce recuitment of a PhD position
Purpose:
- To ensure quality of the research project
- To ensure the academic milieu in which doctoral education is conducted.
- To approve the selected PhD supervisor constellation
- To increase supervisor awareness of quality assurance within Doctoral Education.
Procedure:An application form is completed by the applicant and submitted as a PDF to the Departmental Administration.
Review:The application is reviewed by the Prefect, Administrative Chief, Research Coordinator, Division Head and Director of Studies
Criteria:
- Perceived scientific quality in the environment
- Perceived academic milieu
- Supervisor track record
- Economic track record
Decision:Applications may either be:
APPROVED in which case the applicant is free to apply for KI funding, recruit a PhD student and submit an application for admission to doctoral education
CONDITIONALLY APPROVED in which case restrictions or conditions are agreed before formal approval
DECLINED in which case constructive feedback is given to the applicant to indicate potential improvements that would facilitate new application.
Appeal:Any appeal will necessitate a formal meeting with the applicant and all reviewers in order to discuss the individual case.
POINTS OF PERSPECTIVE
(i)An annual review of eligibility is necessary in order to permit assessment of both positive and negative developments with specific environments and supervisors.
(ii) The Admissions procedure stage 3 for the admissions board (CNS3) is in no way affected by the CNS1-2-3 as the Admissions Board still retains the assignment of evaluating the research programme and formulating a recommendation to the Prefect, and the Department still retains the ability not to agree to the financial plan.
(iii)CNS1 approval is still required even inthe absence of an open recruitment step (2) (e.g. for clinicians with full-time salaries)
