Egg Drop Project Report Mr. Fonash (40 points) Due: Thursday, 4/4/2013

1.  Calculations

Given: The mass of your egg was: 58g

Given: The mass of your support structure AND the egg was: ______

Given: The height of the drop was: 460cm

a.  What was the weight of the egg? (the downward Force) ______

b.  What was the weight of the support structure AND egg? ______

c.  When held over the railing, what was the PE of your structure/egg?

d.  What was the KE of the structure/egg as it impacted the ground?

e.  What was the velocity of the structure/egg as it impacted the ground?

f.  How long (Δt) was your structure/egg in the air?

g.  How many g’s of force was acting on your structure/egg while in the air?

h.  What was the momentum of your structure/egg at the railing’s edge?

i.  What was the momentum of the structure /egg as it was about to impact the ground

j.  What was its Δp as it fell through the air toward the ground?

k.  AFTER the actual collision with the ground, what was its final momentum?

l.  What was the Impulse during the actual collision of the structure/egg and the ground?

To know how long it took for the structure/egg to come to a complete we would need a high speed camera to analyze the structure’s impact. Based on internet information obtained, it takes a raw, unprotected egg approximately 0.083 seconds to come to a full stop when dropped from a height similar to our experiment.

m.  Based on this time, how much force would be on the egg (causing it to come to a complete stop) if it was UNPROTECTED by your support structure?

n.  Assuming that your support contraption slowed the time to come to a complete stop to 0.1 seconds, how much force would be exerted on your egg?

o.  Would the force on the egg be larger or smaller when enclosed in your support contraption?

2.  Report (TYPED on separate paper and attached)

  1. Describe what you designed.
  2. Describe why you designed it (what were you thinking? What did you want it to do?)
  3. Was your design successful?
  4. Describe how your design worked failed (give a play-by-play account of how your device behaved in the collision)
  5. How would you re-design the device? (be VERY specific, noting at least 3 ways that you would redesign AND what the new design would be)
  6. Describe using as much PHYSICS as possible, why any support contraption would keep it occupants safer in a crash. (here’s where you REALLY need to describe ALL the Physics of a crash !!!!!)

How to get the most points:

Write in full sentences.

Be specific when describing redesigns to your device.

FULLY describe the Physics involved.

SHOW ALL YOUR WORK
