Passage 1

This is my last Dean´s Message in Connections. On June 30th I step down as dean of The College. I have served as dean for seven years with pleasure and pride and enjoyed the opportunity Connections provides to communicate with you twice a year. I will miss that opportunity just as I will miss being dean; I believe it is one of the most interesting and rewarding positions at the University.

My decision to resign results from a desire to take on some challenges outside the academic world while I am still able, and from a sense that the initial agenda I set for The College seven years ago has largely been accomplished. We have achieved a great deal. The College is on sound financial footing although the need for additional resources will always be with us, and the future will bring unanticipated needs, but with your support, we have made great gains in academic programming for undergraduates throughout The College.

You may recall them from previous Connections: our Center for Undergraduate Research and Innovative Learning; our combined Freshman Forum/Freshman Lecture program for first-year students; sophisticated undergraduate computing experiences; and more. The College also established new centers of research and expanded funding for faculty development. These initiatives help in recruiting and retaining a student body and a faculty that is both excellent and diverse.

Our department chairs have worked assiduously to advance our teaching and research mission. Faculty successfully engage students int he latest scientific advances; in refining understanding of social and historical institutions, and in dialogue with the best of our many heritages in the arts, literatures, and other cultural areas. Their original scholarly and creative work receives national and international recognition.

Task 2. Read the passage 1 again.

Choose and circle the best single alternatives to the words underlined in the text:

  • initial a. beginning b. influential c. anonymous d. significant
  • freshman a. novice b. ventilation c. brightness d. senior
  • chairs a. seats b. authorities c. leaders d. committees
  • mission a. exclusion b. evangelist c. excursion d. goals
  • heritages a. family possessions b. legacies c. histories d. products

Task 3. Read the passage 2 and circle the best single summary:

People working on the sea often believe that

  1. porpoises tend to drown people in water.
  2. porpoises tend to rescue people from water.
  3. porpoises tend to surround people in water.
  4. porpoises tend to drive people out of water.

Marine Studio biologists claim that

  1. porpoises should be considered as very intelligent animals
  2. porpoises should not be considered as having a natural inclination of rescuing people.
  3. porpoises endanger people.
  4. porpoises have no credit.

When porpoises do push to shore an unconscious human being,

  1. they do it because they like to ride the bow waves of a ship.
  2. they do it because they are inquisitive.
  3. they do it because they are apathetic towards sports.
  4. they do it because they are like human beings.

It has been documented that porpoises have

  1. released beavers from water.
  2. released other objects, like mattresses, from water.
  3. released photographs from water.
  4. released people from sharks.

If porpoises and sharks start fighting with each other,

  1. sharks can lose.
  2. porpoises can drive sharks.
  3. sharks kill porpoises.
  4. the battle may terminate their hostility.

Passage 2

There has long been a superstition among mariners that porpoises will save drowning men by pushing them to the surface, or protect them from sharks by surrounding them in defensive formation. Marine Studio biologists have pointed out that, however intelligent they may be, it is probably a mistake to credit dolphins with any motive of life-saving. On the occasions when they have pushed to shore an unconscious human being they have much more likely done it out of curiosity or for sport, as in riding the bow waves of a ship. In 1928 some porpoises were photographed working like beavers to push ashore a waterlogged mattress. If, as has been reported, they have protected humans from sharks, it may have been because curiosity attracted them and because the scent of a possible meal attracted the sharks. Porpoises and sharks are natural enemies. It is possible that upon such an occasion a battle ensued, with the sharks being driven away or killed.

  1. IF you were an American, what should/shouldn´t you do to be safe. Write down 5 pieces of ideas.

a………………………………………………………………
b………………………………………………………………

Passage 1.

The U.S. government believes that terrorists may be planning to conduct attacks including against official and non-official Americans, in and around the New Year periods (from now through mid-January 2000) with particular emphasis on locations where large groups of people may congregate for millennial or religious festivities. The Government of Jordan, as it announced, has made several arrests in conjunction with one such possible incident. As a result of the intensive investigative work on this matter, we have learned that possible sites in Jordan may have included hotels, tour buses, and tourist sites.

We cannot rule out the possibility that attacks still may be planned for this and other parts of the world.

American citizens overseas during the period are urged to review their security practises, to remain vigilant to their surroundings and to exercise caution. American citizens should avoid large crowds and gatherings, keep a low profile, and vary routes and times of all required travel.

American citizens traveling or residing abroad should regularly monitor our Consular Information program Internet website at to obtain the latest information available in our Consular Information Sheets, Public Announcements, Travel Warning, and regional brochures. We will continue to provide updated information if it becomes available. American citizens overseas may contact the American Citizens Services unit of their nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate by telephone or fax for up-to-date information on security conditions. This Public Announcement expires on March 9, 2000.

The Czech Republic has once again come under fire as a fire as a heaven for smugglers of people and drugs.

A recent European Union report blasted Prague for not tightening the country´s borders against an influx of illegal aliens and goods, especially drugs. And a CIA report leaked to the New York Times called the Czech Republic one of Europe´s main sources of women smuggled to work ad prostitutes in the West.

The CIA report, made public by the Times on April 2, confirmed a 1999 analysis by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The report said Central Europe, Russia and Ukraine, were "the fastest growing source for trafficked women and girls fort the sex industry."

As many as 100 000 women from this region ended up working as prostitutes in North America during the lst two years, according to the CIA document.

The EU report, leaked to the media on March 29, said Prague and Budapest presented open fields for smugglers and warned the EU membership candidates to have border controls in force by the time they join the EU-

Both countries, as well as Poland, hope to join the EU in 2003.

In accordance with the Schengen pact on borders, EUI countries enjoy free passage of people and goods but must bear responsibility for allowing any illegal products or aliens into EU territory.

The Czech Republic is a key passageway for smugglers charging high fees to get desperate immigrants into Western Europe.

TRANSCRIPT

A famous place

Well, yes, yes I have. I have been there but I´m afraid I haven´t really seen it properly. [ Uh, huh] Well that may sound a bit strange but er when I was a student at Oxford I was at a party one night and, er, several of us who had had a little bit to drink were sitting round and we were rather keen on romantic literature and er theatrical effects and we thought it would be er rather a romantic thing to do to drive off er in the early hours of the morning and watch the sun rise there. So we all got into the car and drove off for about, I suppose, an hour and a half and er we wanted to see the sun come up behind the stones. Well, when we got there it was still dark but it was extremely cold and extremely wet and very foggy. We couldn´t, when the sun began to come up, when it began to get a little bit light we couldn´t in fact see anything at all because there was so much, er so much fog around. Yeah, it was a bit of a disaster because the the worst thing was that we were all sitting shivering in the car when this great thump came on the window and a policeman shone his torch inside and said, ‘Oi, oi, oi, what´re you doin’ here?’ and er told us to move on. I think he thought we were going to er paint pictures all over it because you know that has happened from time to time. Anyway, it was not the the most successful of our trips.
