Dear Prospective Member:

Thank you for your interest in joining CalvART Gallery. The members of CalvART are dedicated to fostering a vibrant art community in Southern Maryland, developing strong ties between artists and vital community organizations, and learning from each other to improve our art. Our members intentionally choose to belong to a co-op; we value the fellowship and embrace the hard work that co-op membership entails. We welcome all forms of art that meet gallery standards, and we seek diversity in both the artwork and our membership.

Attached is a membership package in which you will find:

  • A Membership Application
  • General Guidelines for Jurying
  • An Affiliation Agreement

Membership in CalvART entails being approved by a majority of current members through a jurying process. Unless we are over capacity in total members or a particular media, we generally jury prospective members at each of our monthly meetings. Because this is a process that takes time and a lot of thought by our members, we ask that you only submit work for jurying if you are ready to join if approved.

If you are interested in applying:

  • Please contact any of the jury committee members:

-Denise Breitburg: or 410-535-4349; potter)

-Ray Noble ( or 410-474-8781; glass artist)

-Mary Blumberg (r 410-394-0626; painter)

-or call the gallery during our regular hours of operation (410-535-9252, Thursday – Sunday 11AM – 5 pm.

  • Fill out the Membership Application, and email it Denise.
  • Please read the affiliation agreement that you will need to sign to join the gallery if you are approved. Being a member of a co-op is rewarding, but is quite different than simply dropping off work at a gallery and paying a commission on the work that is sold.

JURYING:A member of the gallery will let you know the next available date for jurying, the number and types of pieces to bring in, and will help guide you through the process. You will generally be expected to submit five gallery-ready pieces that are representative of the type of work you would like to sell at CalvART. Artists who work in similar media may be best able to answer technical questions that you have.

Upon acceptance into the gallery, you will be asked to sign the Affiliation Agreement (attached for your information), pay your gallery fees, and sign up for orientation to learn the business side of the gallery and what to do when you are sitting the gallery.

We look forward to meeting you and viewing your artwork

Best wishes,

CalvART Jurying Committee

Guidelines for Jurying

Jurying artists will consider factors such as:

  • CREATIVITY/ORIGINALITY.
  • DESIGN/PRESENTATION.
  • TECHNIQUE/USE OF MATERIALS.
  • OVERALL IMPACT.

Other considerations:

All work must be original and should be representative of work you wish to sell at the gallery.

Please clearly mark or identify the media used with any additional information that will help the gallery members understand your work. For example, is photography digitally altered? Is the piece part of a series,? etc.

Artwork submitted for jurying must be “ready for gallery presentation”. Be sure to check with a gallery member about expectations for your particular media
