The University of Oregon Piano Pedagogy Program is a part of the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance (SOMD) degree programs in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy. The teachers in the Pedagogy Program study piano pedagogy under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Claire Wachter. Former teachers from this program now have teaching positions in many countries all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and South America.

The University of Oregon Piano Pedagogy Program Piano offers piano lessons to students of all levels from age 6 to adult. The lessons are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3–6 pm and on Saturday mornings from 9am–12pm at the School of Music and Dance in the Piano Pedagogy Office, room 203. The lesson schedule is posted on the door.

The 40-minute piano lessons also include basic music theory as part of the student’s musical training. There is a Spring Recital each year in June for all students. Participation is encouraged but not required.

Tuition

Tuition is due at the first lesson of the term. Tuition in currently $180.00 and includes ten lessons during the 10-week term. Students must buy their own music and bring all music and materials to each lesson.

Parents are welcome to attend the child’s lessons. We request that parents remain quiet during the lessons. If parents prefer to wait in the SOMD lobby during the lessons we ask that they be on time to meet their child when the lesson is over. The School of Music and Dance cannot provide supervision for your child.

All tuition checks should be made payable to The University of Oregon Piano Pedagogy Program. Please give your check to the SOMD accountant Ceci Lafayette. Include your child’s name on the check.

Tuition may also be paid online using a credit card.

Lesson Policy

If the student cannot attend the lesson please give us notice within 24 hours of the scheduled lesson time. One lesson per term can be rescheduled. Any lesson missed by the teacher will be rescheduled by the end of each term.

Video Recording Policy

The University of Oregon Piano Pedagogy Program is a teacher-training program.Our teachers are asked to video selected lessons in order toimprove their teaching. These videos are for learning and evaluation only and will not be made public.

Piano Pedagogy Program Director

Dr. Claire Wachter has given solo, chamber and concerto performances in the U.S., Canada, Spain and Italy. She has presented recitals, lectures and master classes in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, China and Korea. Wachter has held faculty positions at the University of Texas in Austin (collaborative piano) and the University of the Pacific in California (piano performance).Presently, she is an Associate Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of Oregon.Her students have been prizewinners in local, regional and national competitions.Claire Wachter is a Steinway Artist.
