NURSE EDITH CAVELL 1865 - 1915

Edith Cavell has been described as the ‘forgotten heroine’, but things are changing. The Church of England remembers her on 12 October the Anniversary of her death. The Royal Mint is remembering her this year with a five pound commemorative coin. The National Curriculum has given her a place in KS1 History.

Edith Cavell was an English nurse who was shot by a German firing squad on the 12 October 1915 at 7am. She had been living in Brussels where she was creating an institute to train nurses. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1914, Edith and her nurses treated English soldiers wounded in the early battles of the war, then instead of handing them over to the German occupiers when they were better, she became part of a network of Belgian citizens helping them escape to neutral Holland.

Doing this involved a woman brought up to be truthful in deceit, doing this made the law abiding daughter of a Norfolk Vicar a resistance worker. Eventually she and other members of the network were caught by the Germans and Edith and another member of the network were sentenced to death.

The night before her execution she was visited by an English Chaplain in Brussels. As you can imagine, they spoke of many things. They shared communion and repeated the words of ‘Abide with me’, then Edith said something quite astonishing considering that she loved England, calling it the ‘dear country’.

Edith said, ‘patriotism is not enough, I must have no bitterness or hatred in my heart to anyone’. These words were surely astonishing coming from someone about to be shot by her enemies, they are not an abandonment of patriotism but they represent rather the expansion of the range of her care for people beyond those of her own country to embrace humanity as a whole. As she died the next morning her last words were, ‘I die for God and my Country’ David Winston
