The State of PBIS
At WHEMS, we use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or “PBIS,” to track student behaviors throughout their day in school. Students earn “Cat Cash” for meeting behavioral expectations, which allows them access to our game room, trips or events, and random incentives. The data collected from this system also helps to identify those who are having difficulty meeting the expectations, so that interventions and/or more support can be offered. Coming up, eligible students will be invited to Skyzone (Feb 7th), a trampoline park in Timonium. Please continue to help in discussing the importance of appropriate behaviors in school with your child(ren). If you have questions about PBIS, you may speak to your child’s homeroom teacher, or contact Mr. Navyac.

Make Your Heart Happy
Your hear works harder than any other muscle in your body. What have you done for it lately? Here’s how you can show your heart some love:
Sleep Well-People who sleep less than 7 hours a night tend to have higher blood pressure, so do your heard a favor and get your ZZZ’s.
Go Fish-Salmon, Mackerel, and anchovies are loaded with omega 3s. Just 1 serving a week is enough to make a heart-healthy difference.
Move It-Inactive people are nearly twice as likely to develop heart disease as people who exercise, according to the National Institutes of Health
Adopt a Pet-In addition to providing unconditional love and being super cute, pets can lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. / January Student of the Month:

Ways to Support your Child in Middle School Math through Games:
Multiplying Integers War: Need – 1 deck of cards
Rules:
Black Cards = positive numbers; Red Cards = negative numbers Ace is worth 1; Jack is worth 11; Queen is work 12; King is worth 13; Take out Jokers
How to Play:
1. Deal out cards evenly between the 2 players.
2. Begin by both players flipping over top 2 cards. Remember that two negatives make a positive product.
3. The highest product win all four cards.
4. If the cards products have the same value, the cards are placed in the center pile (or set aside). The next hand is played normally and will determine the winner of the previous set aside cards plus the current hand.
5. Play continues until one person holds all the cards or until a set amount of time has passed, and then the person holding most of the cards wins the game.
