Each course will be held Monday to Thursday at the British Council, Milan, Via Manzoni, 38 and delivered in English by qualified and experienced teacher trainers.

Each course has a duration of 10 hours except the TKT Modules 2+3, which runs for 2 weeks and has a duration of 20 hours.

The cost of each course is €120 except the TKT Modules 2+3, which costs €260 and includes the exam fee for both modules.

SEPTTKTTKT Modules 2+3 (part 1 and 2)

This course will prepare participants for taking Modules 2 and 3 of the TKT, the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test and is aimed at Italian teachers of English already working in, or contemplating a career in ELT. The sessions will cover the basic concepts and terminology needed to teach English and to take the TKT test, a paper-based multiple choice exam lasting 80 minutes.

Among the areas covered in Module 2 and 3 are:

  • Classroom management
  • Practice activities
  • Lesson and course planning
  • Selection and use of coursebook materials
  • Use of reference resources and supplementary materials
  • Using electronic resources and other aids
  • Giving feedback and assessing progress

Although there is no observed teaching practice component, the course will be of a very practical nature, illustrated with examples from current course materials, and participants will be regularly encouraged to reflect on their own teaching and try out techniques for themselves in the contexts they currently work in.

WK1_A_1Teaching Pronunciation

During this course we will look at the features of English pronunciation which pose problems for Italian learners. We will examine a range of techniques to help students improve their intelligibility and increase their confidence when speaking.

WK1_E_1Starters, Movers, Flyers; Young Learner English Tests and the 2007 Revisions

The aims of this course are:

  • to familiarise teachers with the Young Learner English Tests.
  • to explain the revisions made in 2007 and the reasons for these changes.
  • to see how preparing for these tests can promote and encourage effective learning and teaching.
  • to give some practical teaching ideas for the classroom.

Trainer:Catherine Toomey is an experienced Cambridge examiner, English teacher and teacher trainer.

WK1_E_2Language Improvement and Teaching Ideas for Scuola Media Inferiore

This course is aimed at teachers of Scuola Media and will have two main points of focus. Firstly we will look at the language teachers need to effectively manage the classroom in English and secondly we will look at a range of ideas that can be used in the Media classroom to engage and motivate students. Participants will increase their confidence by improving their own language and increasing their repertoire of teaching ideas.

WK2_A_1 Preparing Students for B2 and C1 Exams

Are your students taking the right exam for their level and needs?

An in-depth look at how to prepare higher level candidates for ESOL exams (FCE, CAE, BEC Vantage and BEC Higher). An overview of these exams with practical tips and activities to use with your students in class. We will also look at ways of assessing the writing and speaking papers .

WK2_E_1Learning Technologies

This course will look at how learning technologies are enhancing the way teachers teach. We will look at ways of integrating the Internet in class and have practical demonstrations and practice sessions of using the IWB (Interactive Whiteboard).This course will be suitable for all teachers of all levels with little or no experience of using learning technologies.

Trainer:Suzanne Schumacher is ICT Coordinator at British Council, Milan. She has many years experience of teaching and teacher training and specialises in learning technologies.

WK2_E_2Language Improvement and Teaching Ideas for Scuola Elementare

This course is aimed at teachers of Scuola Elementare and will have two main points of focus. Firstly we will look at the language teachers need to effectively manage the classroom in English and secondly we will look at a range of ideas that can be used in the Elementare classroom to engage and motivate students. Participants will increase their confidence by improving their own language and increasing their repertoire of teaching ideas.

WK3_A_1Developing Skills for the KET Examination

This 10 hour course is aimed at Scuola Media and Scuola Superiore teachers preparing students for the KET exam. It will examine different techniques and strategies to develop the various skills required to pass the exam with particular reference to the listening and speaking parts.

The course will also evaluate specific KET course material and highlight the common mistakes made and difficulties encountered by students. All participants are kindly asked to bring with them the current text book they are using with their intended KET students.

Jane Hoatson is a free-lance teacher trainer and KET oral examiner for the British Council. She prepares students for the KET exam in Scuola Media.

WK3_E_1Language Improvement for Teachers C1+

This course is aimed at teachers of English who have an advanced level of English. Among other areas of the language, we will look at less common collocations, idiom, modality and phrasal verbs.
