explain purpose

Splitting of Handbooks

C. Ziegler

all items will be connected to policy portal when ready; waiting on technology; will be trichotomy of University, Employee, and Faculty Handbooks

VPAA and Provost Changes and Other Changes

Dr. Ken Harmon

Drs. Whittlesey and Joyce on the academic side with Dr. Whittlesey handling both undergrad & grad curriculum and Dr. Joyce as associate provost; Dr.Ron Matson works strictly with faculty under title Associate Vice President for Faculty

Dr. Matson

My job defined as working with faculty; here to help: handbook, T & P, faculty affairs such as hiring, online searches, etc.

Dr. Maureen McCarthy

Faculty Executive Assistant to the President for 3-yr non-renewable term

Wireless Communication Policy proposal

Michelle McGinty

bring KSU in line with others; who gets cell (Hines); stipend if use own; purpose to provide guidance

Athletics

Vaughn Williams

3.11 average GPA for student athletes very proud of this accomplishment; community service award; 1st year for women’s lacrosse; Dr. Randy Kennedy on staff to help; leadership academy for athletes; tix free for faculty; GradesFirst must have as Division I school to graduate students within certain number of years; athletes should introduce selves early in semester; football moving forward but still have major ask to determine other steps

University Announcements

Dr. Papp

Introduced Dr. Colleen Nolan, American Council of Educationfellow, spending fall semester at KSU when usually dean at Shepherd University

Sept. 14 KSU hosting DayGlow concert at stadium; 5500 tix $37.50@ but 1st 1000 KSU students $20@--concert for 18 and older

+/- Grading presented to vice chancellor Houston Davis—on board and thinks approved by fall semester; SGA opposed request but support of F. Senate, VPAA, and President; soonest Fall ’13; once approved almost instantaneous; if fails, separate grading for graduate student requires another proposal

Draft for Strategic Plan 2012-2017 complete; vision & mission statements need BOR approval; few modifications: weaknesses-threats—more concise and less whine; add action step for expansion of online emphasis and action step to increase facility usage

TCSGa—wants transferable general studies between technical schools and university (KSU, etc); not much impact on KSU other than good PR; C. Ziegler—concern for rigor of core courses in math and science: SACS accredited or moving that way

Study Abroad moving toward permanent KSU presence in Tuscany, Italy, with classrooms b/c there 8 months out of year; other USG schools there with KSU leadership; refurbishing of Fortessa castle needs 350K Euros; KSU asked to be a partner in this effort; KSU has raised non-state funds of $310K and still need $100K - $200K; will allow KSU a permanent place internationally

Foundation fellows—have 2 chairs funded at $30K for research in science and math b/c of Lab Science building; delay in opening to install HVAC system due to good management of funds; GRA to help equip 5th floor by providing $100K/yr as long as can

Bad News—state government requires KSU to reduce spending by 3% but have 2+% reserve to cover; expectation that 3% not high enough to cover it; impacts health care initiative for all KSU employees and tax structure, effective -2% in budget; cover by delay hires of non-faculty, holding health package, more students than expected (25,100 enrolled as of today), represents +1000 over last year

Changes in taking degrees downtown: first told one degree at a time but now can bring more at once; KSU conservative in the number of degrees brought down, but expect 8 degrees proposed in next year; more integrated approach of looking at student demand, employment needs, facilities usage, campus level support; listed several masters level degrees—music, environmental analysis and sustainability, sports management—bachelors in culinary hospitality, non-profit management, special education, etc.

C. Ziegler—busting at seems already affect what programs we get? KSU second lowest in sq. ft/student at 95 ft2/student when others are on average 120 ft2/student which gives KSU leverage for building requests; also moved to 5-day/week schedule this fall for better facility usage; moving to hybridized classes and increasing online classes; Paulding site moving toward a 1000 students

S. Braden made motion to adjourn w/2nd at 4:47.

NOTE: Randy Stuart led an orientation for new senators from 3 - 3:30 and did a great job.
