FIRST QUARTER SYLLABUS

Weeks 1-3
Students will gain a basic knowledge of music theory, which will include the following concepts:
Staff, Lines, and Spaces
Treble Clef, Lines of the Treble Clef
Spaces of the Treble Clef
Double Bar, Bar lines and Measures
Bass Clef, Lines of the Bass Clef
Spaces of the Bass Clef
Time Signatures: 4/4, ¾, 2/4
Notation
Whole, Half, Quarter notes and rests
Tempo
Review and Written Assessment
Weeks 4-6
Students will be able to:
Assemble and Disassemble, Care and Maintenance of the instrument
Posture, Breathing, Embouchure with mouthpiece only
Listen and Match Pitch
Clarinet should play F# with mouthpiece and barrel
Demonstrate correct playing position with instrument
Pass a performance based assessment and review
Percussion will learn first sticking patterns in the book on a mallet instrument
Weeks 7-9
Students will:
Play, count, clap and sing whole note/whole rest rhythm patterns
Play, count, clap and sing half note/half rest rhythm patterns
Play, count, clap and sing quarter note/quarter rest rhythm patterns
Play, count, clap and sing eighth note/eighth rest rhythm patterns
Demonstrate an understanding of dotted rhythms, dotted quarter notes first
Review and pass Performance Assessment

Students will continue to review concepts and material from 1st quarter and be introduced to:
The Musical Phrase
Percussion will perform paradiddles and accents and begin working on auxiliary instruments such as wood block

Common Time and the Fermata

The terms Solo, Soli, and Tutti
Beginning Composition (cross-referenced with the National Standards for Music Education)

Remain silent in concert formation prior to entering the performance area
Remain attentive to the conductor
Maintain correct posture while standing or sitting during performance
Maintain proper performance etiquette including no gum, food, or drink
The “March” style
