INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS

  1. OEI Update (III.A.)Lindsey Bertomen
  • Lindsey noted that his email contained in depth review and highlights of his last consortium attendance. (These notes are posted to DEC web page under Agenda, Minutes & Other Documents – Sept.)
  • Question on why English 1A was not on it – but it was determined that English 100 was English 1A (using CID numbers).
  • Maria wants to have her courses on Canvas.
  • Lindsey will work with Maria.
  • General question put forth – how has reception been from those working in Canvas now.
  • For Tina accessibility is her biggest concern. Course design is not an issue, but had students reporting difficulty in accessing it. Will meet with Laura about this issue.
  • Lisa noted opposite; that it had improved her student’s ability to access the course (and Canvas was easy to access). Complete opposite from etudes.
  • Course Exchange will be starting in Spring 2017 (Just initial 8 colleges).
  • Hartnell College will start in Fall 2017. (refer to Lindsey’s notes)
  • Delay is due to college differences that still need to be addressed such as:
  • Semester vs. quarter; financial aid issues, Counseling, how DSPS is handled as not all have the same definitions. These need to be brought together before rest of colleges start.
  • OIE will be at Hartnell College and sit down with all involved administrators. It will be a four hour meeting with A&A. Lindsey noted that it is OEI expectation that HC will sign at the meeting.
  • Renata noted that there was meeting with VP Kildal and VP Phillips – OEI is aware of HC questions. OEI will be at MPC before HC and Cabrillo the day after.
  • Lisa and Carol will be attending on 29th. Tina will be calling in and Renata will get phone number for Tina.
  • Clarified that one college in the Consortium will not be a teaching college. As long as a college is in OEI the software will be free. Indefinitely. If not in the Consortium it is not free.
  1. Canvas (III.B) Committee Discussion
  • Lindsey shared on his set up and noted that SLOs can be tied in.
  • Laura noted that at the end of her Canvas trainings people have been excited about it. Feeling is that it is much better than Etudes.
  • Laura will put Lindsey’s class on Canvas web page so committee can enroll and see what is going on. She strongly advises and how she instructs is to have a beginning and ending module butHAVE A LANDING PAGE.
  • Canvas Meeting was on Labor Day. VP Phillips coordinates. When is next meeting? Nothing is on calendar – October 3rd was thrown out.
  1. Best Practice FIG (III.C) Carol Hobson

It will be emailed and posted on site for all to review and put on next meeting agenda.

OTHERITEMS/BRIEFANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Last term discussed having the intro to teaching an online course. Laura Lark

(contract requirement). It was in rough draft. It will be ready to launch in November. Laura asks what is needed to launch? Review by committee/Flex Committee, publish, anything else? Put on next agenda.

  • Handbook page has meeting every 2nd Tuesday and should be 3rd Tuesday. Dawn Henry will make correction.
  • Hiring of a Coordinator??? Where does this stand. Deans voted yes at their level, then it was to go to Academic Affairs then to CPC. Why has it taken a full hear and a half and nothing has been heard. Renata to check at Board Development meeting and report at next meeting.
  • Can Distance Education get someone interim?
  • Is the position Administration level?
  • Dr. Atallah discussed the $2million of Strong Workforce money being available and possibly help DEC. Asked for members to think of possible projects or use.
  • Was asked if this has been presented to Academic Senate (curriculum related) and response was that at this time it has not.
