Altuve, Backe among Houston baseball stars visiting Galveston

GALVESTON – Come meet current and former Houston Astros stars, when Moody Gardens hosts the Astros 2015 Caravan on Jan. 23.

All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve, outfielder Alex Presley, and former Astros pitcher and Galveston native Brandon Backe will make a Caravan stop at Moody Gardens from 2-3:45 p.m.

Guests are invited to come see these fan favorites in the Aquarium Pyramid lobby at 2 p.m., before they visit the Moody Gardens penguins and go on a tour through the Rainforest Pyramid.

The Astros Caravan is an annual event where Houston players and alumni travel around the region to interact and engage with fans.

In 2014, Altuve became the first Astros player in team history to win a batting title. He hit .341 with a Major League-high 225 hits. He also finished with a league-high 56 steals.

The shortest player in baseball at 5-foot-6, Altuve is a two-time All-Star and the reigning AL Silver Slugger winner at second base.

Backe was a former football and baseball star at Galveston Ball High School. After beginning his career with Tampa Bay, the Astros traded for him in 2003, where he quickly became a fan favorite. He pitched for Houston from 2004-09 going 30-28. He was 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in seven playoff appearances for the Astros.

Acquired prior to the 2014 season, Presley hit .244 with six home runs and 19 RBIs. The left-handed hitting outfielder made 63 starts, including 29 in left field, 20 in right field and 14 in center field.
