SPECIFIED PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

The following situation will be addressed in this scope of practice:

Non RenownSouthMeadowsMedicalCenter Employee Physician Assistant

RELATIONSHIPS:

Specified Professional Personnel (SPPs) receiving clinical privileges are not employed by RenownSouthMeadowsMedicalCenter they must be employed by an active member or group of members of the Renown South Meadows Medical Center Medical Staff.

The hospital activities of the Specified Professional Personnel shall be under the supervision of the Medical Staff member(s) who initiates the application and who is responsible for the professional and ethical conduct of the SPP. The SPP will be indirectly responsible to the appropriate supervisors in the areas of the hospital in which the SPP practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:Baccalaureate Degree

Training:Graduation from a 40 hour CAHEA (AMA’s Committee on Allied Health, Education and Accreditation) approved program.

Experience:Two (2) years of experience in the area of clinical practice area, in which privileges are requested, in a recognized health setting (this may include time spent in a training program).

License(s)/Certification(s):Current Nevada License for Physician Assistants.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The PA may perform the following functions in addition to any that may be specifically delineated in the Appendix:

  1. Perform a History and Physical on elective admissions, elective pre-procedure/surgery with the co-signature of a supervising physician within the next calendar day.
  1. Order tests initiate or perform selected diagnostics or procedures in accordance with existing protocol approved by the appropriate specialty Department and/or Section, Medical Executive Committee and Board of Governors.
  1. May provide assistance to the supervising physician for the following procedures: central venous catheter, thoracentesis, paracentesis and lumbar puncture.
  1. Make and document daily rounds to augment the physician’s rounds.
  1. Assist in discharge planning and teaching.
  1. May dictate discharge summary.

See Appendix for any additional privileges specific to a specialty area. If a different Scope of Practice exists for a specific privilege (ie. Surgical 1st Assisting), the individual must meet the requirements for the existing Scope of Practice.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

1.Accountability for conduct consistent with the Renown Health System Corporate Culture Statement.

2.Accountability and ethical standards within guidelines of professional organizations.

3.Knowledge of Policies and Procedures for the areas of the Hospital within which the SPP will function.

4.Documentation of skills must be provided related to:

a.Systematic physical, psychological and social assessment of the health status of individuals and families.

b.Analysis of data and identification of problems and formulation of collaborative plan of care with physician that provides continuity of health care for patients.

c.Provision of instruction and counseling to individuals and families of environment to support health care.

d.Collaborating with supervising physician to plan for alterations of environment to support health care.

e.Carrying out defined portion of the collaborative plan of care limited to those functions approved by the privileging process.

SUPERVISION

  1. All entries in the medical record (with the exception of the Discharge Summary) as permitted under Nature and Scope, or in the specific Appendix, must be cosigned by the supervising physician within the next calendar day. The Discharge Summary must be cosigned by the supervising physician in the time frame specified by the Medical Staff Rules & Regulations.
  1. Patient rounds in an Acute Care Setting made by a Physician Assistant shall not be considered as fulfilling requirements for Medical Staff member patient rounds.
  1. The Physician Assistant must at all times comply with the provisions of Nevada Revised Statute and other regulations that set for the practice of a Physician Assistant in the State of Nevada.
  1. The supervising physician is responsible for the action of the Physician Assistant at all times.
  1. The first 20 charts will be reviewed by the Department Chief or his designee for compliance with this Scope of Practice, hospital policies, and the community standard of care.

APPENDIX A

Orthopaedics

  1. Initial and ongoing assessment of the patient’ medical, physical and psychosocial status including:
  2. Develop treatment plans
  3. Perform rounds in addition to physician rounds (per medical staff Rules And Regulations) note: Nevada statute does not allow P.A.’s to give orders to R.N.’s
  4. Record progress notes
  5. Discharge teaching and planning
  6. Casting per protocol

Note: There is a separate Scope of Practice for Assisting in surgery under which a Physician Assistant may apply.
