Background
DublinCityUniversity(DCU)isoneofthelargestuniversities inIreland.Itsstudentpopulationis approximately13,000,including500researchpostgraduates,over1,800taughtpostgraduate students andaround3,000distanceeducationstudents.DCUisaresearch-leduniversity,which hasdevelopedits ownresearchspecializations andestablishedinternationallyrecognizedcentresof excellence thathavesubstantivecollaborativelinkswithleadinguniversitiesandindustrial partners.
DCUhas a strongtrack recordinattractingbothIrishandEuropeanUnionresearchfundingunder Horizon2020(andallpreviousFrameworkPrograms),MarieCurieActionsandErasmus.We offeradynamicandinternationally-focused environment,inwhichtoadvanceyouracademic career.
ThePhotonic SensingLaboratory(PSL), a subsidiary of the DCU’sRadio and Optical Communications Laboratory, isaresearchgroupthataimsto developsensing systems based on novel laser transmitters and receiver techniques.Theresearchcarriedoutinthislaboratoryencompasses a wide array of domains includingoptical communications systems, semiconductor devices, optical transmitters and receivers, optical pulse and frequency comb sources, high speed detection and digital signal processing.
TheProject
INDOTSisacommercially focused project funded by Enterprise Ireland and comprises 3 partners: DCU (Lead), University College Cork (Collaborator) and theTyndall National Institute (Collaborator).
There is a global demand, across multiple industries, for improved gas detection to help control emissions. Target markets include manufacturing, power generation, shipping, oil exploration and drilling and industrial services. The Optical Frequency Comb (OFC) solution, developed and patented by DCU, offers distinct advantages over established gas-sensing technologies. The market opportunity is large and growing. There is a drive to reduce emissions, in view of concerns about global warming, resulting in new regulations on gas pollution. Cost effective measurement of emission levels is a key step in this process. Diverse industries release pollutants (some of them with adverse health implications) and are now obligated to upgrade, develop and install multi-gas species detection systems.TheINDOTSprojectgoalsareto:
- Developan optical frequency comb based photonic interrogator (initial prototype made of discrete components)
- Developa dual-comb photonic interrogator (initial prototype made of discrete components)
- Evaluate and benchmark performance of dual comb against optical frequency comb based photonic sensor solution
- Evaluatea dual-comb photonic sensor solution
- Evaluate a dual-comb photonic integrated circuit (PIC)
- Engage with potential adopters
- Validate into real-life applications with a small number of early adopters
