ANNEX A
ASIAN ART BIENNALE, BANGLADESH 2004
Curated by Yvonne Lee, Plastique Kinetic Worms, Singapore
The group of artists selected to represent Singapore in the Asian Art Biennale represents a small but distinctive group that works within discrete spheres of the Singapore contemporary art scene. These artists aspire to adapt themselves to new possibilities to meet the new world order. Their willingness to take up this challenge is reflected in their pursuit of originality and constructing the new while finding and preserving their self.
Vincent Leow is an artist trained at the LASALLE-SIACollege of the Arts (the former St. Patrick Arts Centre) and the MarylandInstituteCollege of the Art in Baltimore, USA. He not only makes installations but also produces paintings that express his concerns of the social environments and his feeling about living in Singapore. Working with various media in 2D and 3D, Vincent constantly experiments with his ideas through different media and which often give him enormous freedom in his creations. He is known for making artworks that deal with social commentary that contain highly personal imageries.
Ye Shufang graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from RMIT and works primarily in drawing, installation and collaborative projects. Her practice “resists the impulse to privilege certain processes as artistic specialisations estranged from the efforts of common and everyday activities. The collapsing of boundaries, between recommended high or fine art materials and processes and those available in any household implies a ‘leveling-out’ criteria – designating one genre of materials/process to the same status (and importance) as the other. For the artist, both ‘classes’ of materials/process are profoundly inter-related – investing in one effectively sensitises us to the other”[1].
Lim Shing Ee’s quirky and playful Reciprocation is a work from her last exhibition titled “Un-Read”. Her interest lies in how thoughts are often triggered as an instinctive behaviour and that results in works made without being bounded by a specific story, narrative or inspiration that attempts to read, re-read or un-read. For her the process and outcome as indeterminate, erratic, obscure and random becomes an important aspect in her exploration.
In Chong Kah Kit’s work titled perhaps our concept of love is not that different after all, he explains that his work is “like story telling that doesn’t seem to have a beginning nor an end. To evade being located in a context, (his work is) about missing out the essential or main plot, leaving just an illumination”[2]
Kah Kit makes paintings and drawings that are faint as well as intimate in its scale. His interest lies in triggering flashback allowing the unconscious memory of light to fall onto within the interior spaces.
