Introduction to Clinical Research to Support Evidence-Based Practice in Manual Therapy

An Eight-Week Online Course

COURSE OVERVIEW

The ability to integrate research evidence into the practice of manual therapy is crucial to ongoing clinical effectiveness. In this online course, you will develop the skills to evaluate current research and applyresearch evidence in the clinical setting, through online course readings, recorded lectures, and discussion board participation. Participants will complete eight week-long modules, undertake a critical appraisal of a research article using the PICO framework and guidelines established by the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and write a case report targeted for submission to Physiotherapy Canada. By the end of this course you will be able to find, appraise, and apply research evidence appropriately and effectively in your own practice. This course is relevant to clinicians and educators who are currently practicing or have previous experience in manual therapy. Course participants should expect to devote approximately 5-8 hours per week to this course.

The CPA Orthopaedic Division now requires all course participants who first registered AFTER January 2014 in their course program (L1 exam), to register in this course BEFORE registering to take the 2018 Advanced Exam. This course is now a requirement of the curriculum.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of research evidence as applied to their manual therapy practice
Search for, appraise, and apply research evidence to the practice of manual therapy
Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence research use in their practice setting
Apply specific strategies to improve integration of research evidence in their practice

INSTRUCTORS

Dr. Cathy Evans, PhD, MSc, BScPT, is a physiotherapist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto. She completed her BSc PT from the University of Toronto, MSc in Epidemiology from McMaster University, and PhD in Education and Technology from the University of Toronto. She is Course Coordinator as well as Instructor for this course.

Lenerdene Levesque, BScPT, MClSc(manip), FCAMPT, has worked in the field of orthopaedics and manual therapy for over 25 years. She graduated from Queen’s University and completed her Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Therapy in 1992 from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. In 2008, she completed the Masters of Clinical Science from the University of Western Ontario. She is an instructor and examiner for the National Orthopaedic Division in postgraduate manual and manipulative education and has mentored many colleagues through this process.
