OPEN ROAD

I named this pattern for a scarf/cowl Open Road because the stripes reminded me of a long highway.

Yarn: 2 skeins of Lion Brand Sock Ease, 438 yards, 75% wool, 25% nylon, colors Marshmallow and Rock Candy

1 skein Patrons Kroy Sock yarn, 166 yards, 75% wool, 25% nylon, color Flax

1 skein Deborah Norville Serenity Sock Yarn, 230 yards, 50% wool, 25% Rayon Bamboo, 25% nylon, color Hot Lime

(I bought these yarns with 40-50% off coupons at Michaels and Joanns for a total of $18 and did not use all of the yarn on any of the skeins for this project)

needles: size 6 circulars, 40”, although 60” would be more comfortable for the number of stitches if you cast on more than 300, plus size 8 needles for bind off

Notions: embroidery needle and some leftover yarn Flax yarn for sewing ends together (if you are making a cowl)

Gauge: not important, my finished size: 10” x 8’4”

Carry unused colors up the side

Odd rows are RS, even rows are WS

Slipped stitches: yarn held in back on RS, yarn held in front on WS

Cast on 300 – 426 stitches(mine was 426 because I wanted a longer piece). Make sure your cast on is divisible by 2.

Row 95-102: Knit in Rock Candy

Bind Off in Rock Candy on size 8 needles.

Weave in ends. Soak in cold water with a small amount of soap for 10 minutes. Rinse well. Wrap in towel to squeeze out excess water. Block on towel.

At this point, you can decide whether to sew the ends together or keep them a scarf. For a scarf, I would tidy up the ends by either a crochet edge or pick up stitches and knit in garter stitch on both ends. If you sew the ends together, sew them with rights sides together. My cowl could wrap around my neck 3 times!

Have fun with the Open Road!

Sl: slip stitch

K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together (Slipped stitches: yarn held in back on RS, yarn held in front on WS)
