Dear Parents:

Welcome back or welcome for the first time to our special Patriot Learning Community. I have had the privilege of leading Mittelstädt over the past 23 years. I am so thankful to be able to work alongside the best teachers, students and parents who support and expect the very best from their students/children.

To receive Good News - Parent Link is our district electronic messaging service we use to communicate with our parents. This is how you will receive Tuesday Folder School Information and “Friendly Patriot Reminders”.

Speaking of Good News - The new system of STAAR testing rates schools based on student progress in math, reading, and achievement. A school can be labeled as “Met Standard,” or “Improvement Required.” Distinctions may be earned based on students performing better than projected and earning points for going beyond meeting the basic standard. Mittelstadt met standard on the STAAR, earned distinctions in the areas of Reading and Math, and was ranked in the top 25% for student achievement. While many schools in Klein met standard, Mittelstadt was one of only three Klein schools to meet standard and earn all three distinctions. So proud of our patriot students and staff!

Student Handbook – The Student Handbook can be viewed on the Klein website at www.Kleinisd.net. There is a form going home with your student today regarding the handbook. You can receive a copy of the Student Handbook if you do not have access to a computer. Check off the option that applies to you, sign, date and return to the school by September 7th. Please go over the Student Handbook carefully with your student as it contains the philosophy and policies of Klein ISD. If your family needs community support assistance, please fill out the Request for Community Support page attached and return as well.

Registration and Medical Cards – Please proofread and sign your child’s pre-printed yellow registration card. Also, please fill out the white Medical card form and the Health Inventory form for the. Please return these cards by Tuesday, September 3rd. Please do not forget area codes for home and business. Remember to put your driver’s license number and date of birth by your signature for security verification when you pick up your child early from school.

Afternoon Dismissal – Our carpool line will form in front of the office entrance. It will be a single file line, as parking will not be permitted on the opposite side of the drive. The teachers on duty and I will see that the students get into their cars. All students will enter their cars from the curb on the passenger side. For the student’s safety, we ask that drivers remain in their cars rather than coming into the building to meet their child. This will make the carpool line run much more smoothly. If you need to come into the building, please park in the school parking lot. Also, it would be very helpful if parents would set up neighborhood carpools to help alleviate traffic congestion. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. Please read the carpool memo regarding carpool signs being sent home with your student today.

Early Dismissal -If you need to take your child out early from school for any reason, please send a note to your child’s teacher, so that the office can write an early dismissal. In the case of a last minute emergency, please call ahead so we can get your child ready to leave. Students must check out through the office. You will not be allowed to take your child from the classroom.

Mittelstädt Open House (Grades 2 and 4 Performing) – On Tuesday, September 10th, all Mittelstädt parents and students are invited to attend our Fall Open House. Pre-ordered dinner will be served beginning at 6:00pm before the short PTO general meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria followed by an informational meeting with your child’s teacher until 8:30 p.m. PTO will also have a wonderful bake sale to raise monies for Mittelstädt!

Newcomers/Volunteers – During our Fall Open House September 10th there will be information provided by PTO for those of interested in volunteering at your child’s school. Sign-up to volunteer and become a part of the Patriot family!

School Hours – The school hours for elementary students are from 8:15 to 3:15. Note the tardy bell will ring at 8:15 in line with the District’s schedule. The morning pre-kindergarten hours are from 8:15 to 11:05 a.m., and the afternoon pre-kindergarten hours are from 12:25 to 3:10 p.m. Car riders may be dropped off at the front office entrance. The bus circle is reserved for buses and daycare buses only. We would appreciate it greatly if you would encourage your child not to arrive prior to the 7:55 a.m. bell.

Medication Policy - All prescription medication must be delivered to the clinic by the parent or guardian. Medications are not sent home with students. This procedure is being implemented for the safety of your child. We hope that this will not cause too much inconvenience to you. It is our goal to keep your child as safe as possible. Please call Carol Ford, the Mittelstädt Nurse, at 832-484-6714 if there is anything she can do to assist you.

Absence Policy REMINDER - It is not necessary for a student to have a note from a doctor each time he/she is ill. However, if the number of absences exceeds 18 days in a school year, and if medical reasons are given for an additional absence, a doctor’s note will be required for the day(s) of illness in order to receive academic credit unless waived by the attendance committee.

Counselor’s Corner – Xiomara Lopez - Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. My name is Xiomara Lopez, and I am the counselor at Mittelstädt. I look forward to meeting and working with you and your children. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns with your child. Adjustments in Class Assignments – After Labor Day, your child’s teacher may be changed due to balancing of class sizes, an addition or deletion of a teacher, or an instructional grouping change. When these changes become necessary and affect your child, we will inform you. In the event that your child should be changed, your cooperation in making this a smooth transition will be greatly appreciated.

Breakfast/Lunch – Student breakfasts are $1.00 and plate lunches are $1.95 each, including milk. A menu will be sent home with your child. Students may deposit money into their account and use their pin number to purchase their lunches. Students should bring their cash or check made payable to the Klein Food Service in an envelope marked with name, pin number, teacher and amount enclosed. You may also pay for your child’s meals through the Klein website: www.kleinisd.net Click on Departments, Facilities & School Services then Food Service.

Tuesday and Friday Take-Home Folders – Your child will bring a folder home every Tuesday. It is our hope that you and your child will take this opportunity to go over the papers together before you sign and return the folder on the following day. Your child will appreciate your praise for accomplishments and progress made, as well as your encouragement and understanding in those areas where improvement is needed. The Friday Folder will contain district/community activities and announcements i.e., sport activities, YMCA, Friday Night Live, Cheerleading, Plays, Workshops, etc. You do not need to sign the Friday folder.

School Supply Sale - If you missed the school supply and T-Shirt sale you can still purchase them from the school store. The school store will be open everyday for the first week of school from 7:45-8:10. When the school year is underway the school store hours will be from 7:45 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Latest in the library - I can’t wait to see our Mittelstädt Readers!
