- Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Citizens begin boycotting.
- Martin Luther King is put in charge of the newly founded Montgomery Improvement Association.
- MIA meets with city officials. The city refuses to comply with their demands.
- The city of Montgomery creates a minimum fare for Taxis. MIA organizes a carpool system to support the boycott.
- Montgomery Improvement Associationtakesits case to Federal Court.
- Martin Luther King Jr.’s house is bombed.
- Bayard Rustin cautions Martin Luther King about being the leader of a non-violent movement, but having armed guards and guns in his home.

- Colonists and British win the French and Indian war - The British government had a large war debt.
- British pass the Proclamation of 1763 stating - British law that forbade colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains
- British pass the Stamp Act requiring colonists to put an expensive stamp on paper products.
- Colonist boycott paper products and intimidate stamp collectors.
- Townshend Acts tax important items colonists couldn’t produce for themselves such as glass, paint, paper and tea.
- Boston Massacre involves the deaths of five civilians at the hands of British troops. Paul Revere and other Patriots use this to make the argument for independence.
- The Tea Act lowered the cost of British tea, making it cheaper than the tea colonial merchants sold.
- Boston Tea Party – Colonists dress like Native Americans dumped over 340 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor.
