Event strips to be cut for Boycott Timeline

  1. Claudette Colvin is one of several women arrested in Montgomery Alabama for refusing to give up her seat on the bus.
  2. Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Citizens begin boycotting.
  3. Martin Luther King is put in charge of the newly founded Montgomery Improvement Association.
  1. MIA meets with city officials. The city refuses to comply with their demands.
  1. The city of Montgomery creates a minimum fare for Taxis. MIA organizes a carpool system to support the boycott.
  1. Montgomery Improvement Associationtakesits case to Federal Court.
  1. Martin Luther King Jr.’s house is bombed.
  1. Bayard Rustin cautions Martin Luther King about being the leader of a non-violent movement, but having armed guards and guns in his home.
  1. Police issue indictments for King and other members of the MIA.
  1. Leaders of the MIA proudly turn themselves into police.
  2. The Supreme Court rules in favor of the Montgomery Improvement Association by a vote of 9-0 ending states right to segregation.

Event Strips for Road to the Revolution

  1. Colonists and British win the French and Indian war - The British government had a large war debt.
  2. British pass the Proclamation of 1763 stating - British law that forbade colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains
  1. British pass the Stamp Act requiring colonists to put an expensive stamp on paper products.
  1. Colonist boycott paper products and intimidate stamp collectors.
  1. Townshend Acts tax important items colonists couldn’t produce for themselves such as glass, paint, paper and tea.
  1. Boston Massacre involves the deaths of five civilians at the hands of British troops. Paul Revere and other Patriots use this to make the argument for independence.
  1. The Tea Act lowered the cost of British tea, making it cheaper than the tea colonial merchants sold.
  1. Boston Tea Party – Colonists dress like Native Americans dumped over 340 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor.
  1. Intolerable Acts - Series of harsh laws designed to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party
  1. Battle of Lexington and Concord started the open conflict between the Colonists and the British.
  1. Battle of Bunker Hill – Colonists take advantage of the high ground and wage a second successful but bloody battle against the British.
  2. After a period of calm, Patriots consider trying to make peace with the British.
  1. After being labeled traitors by King George, Patriot leaders decide to have Thomas Jefferson draft the Declaration of Independence.
