PROJECT TAFEA
Mau Mau School Tank. Port Vila Rotary Club has been coopted to supervise the onsite project management. Currently waiting upon confirmation of material quantities prior to placing order for hardware & tank with an aim of completing project prior to the commencement of the 2013 school year.
Lenakel Skill Centre Toilet Block Matching Grant.
Committee has responded to Lauren Marquez-Viso, Grant Coordinator of the Humanitarian Programs for the Rotary Foundation in relation to a series of ‘micromanaging’ queries she has raised. Our understanding is that she is totally ignorant with the way D9650 RAWCS runs its programs and the third world country location. Committee has emphasized & more than explained position & responsibilities regarding project management, consequently we have to wait on the outcome. However, all future Matching Grants are on hold until the Progress Report in dispute is accepted.
Kits for Kids Appeal. Woolgoolga Club has applied for a District Simplified Grant to partly offset the cost of assembling 50 Kits for Kids for Tanna Is and Mau Mau School for the 2013school year. This is an annual event and has been operating since 2005.
Lenakel Skill Center.
Arrangements have been made with a team from a local community who has assisted on a previous project to continue with the building work on the Skill Centre while there are no Rotary teams available.
Port Resolution Assembly Building.
Slab has been poured & majority of building materials are on site. Recent arrangements have been made with a local builder and local community to proceed with the block work, rendering and roof framing for an agreed fee.
Joint Rotary NZ Project.
Water tank, guttering & hardware materials for these 2 projects have been delivered & ready for installation to be carried out by the local community under our supervision.
2013 Teams. Currently the Project Committee has only minimal interest registered for Project Volunteer Teams to go to Tanna Is in 2013. An advertising activity seeking further volunteers has commenced.
NIAS
A minivan has been ordered & following the payment of small initial underpayment it is now due for delivery.
The proposed other building works has been deferred until the end of the wet season in March, the builders representative Ridwan has proposed that the work be started in March at the end of the rainy season.
The remaining works which are presently unfunded consists of the asphalting of the driveway is the subject of a request to Compass, the largest newspaper company in Indonesia which funded the medical Centre adjoining our mini hospital.
ROTARIANS AGAINST MALARIA
Project Chairman David Pearson has recently delivered presentations on RAM to Tamworth & Tamworth First Light Clubs resulting in a $1000 donation to the Adopt A Village program in Timor Leste & the District Super Meeting in Armidale in late October promoting two alternative approaches for RAM activity. The first being direct donations to RAM’s Adopt A Village program (AAV) to fund additional or replacement bed nets and/or Tools for Villages to provide training and tools for local village scale mosquito vector reduction. The second being donations direct to theD9650 RAM account to assist in funding larger scale initiatives such as Malaria labs in Medical Clinics.
A major conference on Malaria was staged by the Australian Government in Sydney during November. ‘Malaria 2012’ which brought together some 300 delegates from more than 30 countries and 134 organisations where major concerns including –
The increasing parasite resistance to anti-malaria drugs including artemisinin resistance creating an urgent concern in the Greater Mekong region
Increasing insecticide resistance.
The key importance of sustainable financing.
The critical importance of inter-country and interregional cooperation and collaboration.
Those at risk are the most marginalised, and increasingly include migrant workers and adult males.
Major progress reported -
Since 2007, four countries have been certified malaria free
Total of 34 countries outside Africa have reduced cases by 50 percent and deaths by 30 per cent since 2000.
Another 17 countries are in stages of malaria control and poised to eliminate malaria soon.
Papua New Guinea, the Solomons and Vanuatu are the only areas currently experiencing endemic malaria in our nearby Pacific area
Development of a new drug OZ439 by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) in partnership with Uni of Nebraska, Monash University, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Which hopefully leading to an alternative to Artimisinin peroxides

Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise Vanuatu Project ( to be registered)
Sad to say I don’t have anything to report. I’m still waiting to hear back from the people in Lathi village subsequent to our visit there. Dr Tim, our local Rotarian supporter, has offered assistance. Until then I’m reluctant to do anything about registering the project in our Club’s name as we don’t have the necessary plans to propose. As soon as I do I’ll be on to it.Kathryn R Bennett

ROMAC -ROGER WOODWARD FUNDRAISER CONCERT
(Lyn and Brian) The Roger Woodward concert was a lot of effort and not all seats were sold, however the profit of approximately $6789.07 will soon be transferred from the Rotary Club of East Maitland to ROMAC. Further, a couple of thousand dollars were raised to assist Charlie, who it is planned to receive treatment at John Hunter Hospital later this year.
Chumkriel Language School, via Kampot Cambodia Project 2008-09/35
School attendance has continued to increase in both English language classes and tutorial school support classes. With 680 students attending each week, of these 87 are full scholarship students and the remainder pay 7c per class attended, this covers the wage of the teacher for the class delivered, donations are still required to cover administration and management salaries, and to increase learning resources and library book stocks. The libraries are to be financially supported as a designated task of the Rotary Club of Dubbo Macquarie.
In February Mr Paul Asprey, an English teacher of 35 years with theNT department of education, and incoming Regional Director for Rotary, NT/Timor Leste, will be residing at CLS, and will be mentoring teachers and restructuring lesson plans, curriculum, learning resources and mentoring teachers. We believe that this will go a long way toward CLS providing world class lessons, using the most relevant teaching processes.
In respect to Rotary's (RAWCS) involvement, a sunset has been flagged as of the 30 June 2014, to withdraw from CLS. to achieve this income generated at a local level will need to be increased by about $10,000PA, see achievable in our terms, but within the Cambodian economy this has its challenges. So greater links to business andpost training employment are being developed to assist students to procure greater paying employment within the hospitality and business environmentlocally (away from reliance on farming/fishing) and domestic funding sources are being investigated also.

164-205/06 Children’s Village Gampong Anak Aceh - Indonesia - PDG Pam Pritchard, Turramurra Rotary Club
There will be three teachers from the Rotary Club of Lane Cove going in March 2013 to teach at the Primary School in Gampong Anak Aceh
158/2005-06 Dental Teams for Nepal - RtnMalcolm Deall, Rotary Club of Gosford North
The program achievement:The international team and CHDS team together have provided services to 336 people by conducting four dental camps in four different villages. The total of 423 different dental procedures was performed on the people who all visited the camp. Out of the total people, 138 male and 198 female patients received the dental services
The future plan; The poor and remote communities are left behind from the modern dental health service or theyhave to travel far distance seeking the services, and due to comparatively unaffordable fees and the qualityof services, the poor cannot access these good quality dental health services.
Observing the above facts and needs of the dental health care in the district, it is understandable to havemore frequent dental camps at this region to help the underprivileged people and provide good qualitydental service and care “at their doorsteps”.
6/2011-12 Hog Harbour Primary School - Miriam Jacka, Rotary Club of Winston Hills

20/2011-12 Madagascar Flood Rescue, Southern Madagascar - RtnPeter Pearce, Rotary Club of Gosford North
Gosford North Rotary Club raised enough money for goods to fill a 40 foot shipping container including 1,000 hand-knitted woolen blankets, water purification units as clean water is such a high demand, new and used clothing, school satchels, sunglasses, school reference books and novels.
‘A team of four of us from the Rotary club went over in October 2011 to have a look at the situation again to determine the recipients of our aid and talk to the consignees. Everyone was very supportive including the Antananarivo Rotary Club, amongst other clubs in Madagascar, as well as the country’s disaster response unit BNGRC, who all were happy to support us and help us bring in the items. The third container has already be organised ourselves. They wanted to deliver things personally like ShelterBox, which I think is very important. We also decided to take with us sewing programmes where we brought sewing machines, material and instructors to train people, assisting them in starting a business to set up something sustainable that provides them a livelihood.
