Dear Student

As you have been allocated a placement in Lomond Ward, I am writing to welcome you and offer some information about the ward which I hope you will find helpful.

For the duration of your placement you will be allocated a mentor who will work a reasonable amount of the time directly with you. You will have the opportunity to spend some time discussing the aims and objectives you wish to achieve. An associate mentor will be also be allocated to cover in the absence of your allocated mentor and will be accessible throughout most of your placement here. Please bring your placement booklet with you when you start.

The off duty is flexible and we will try to accommodate any particular needs that you may have. You should discuss any queries you have regarding off duty with your mentor in the first instance.

The shift patterns are:

Early shift - 07.30 – 15.30

Late shift - 13.15 – 21.15

Night shift - 20.45 – 08.00

Please note that clinical uniforms are worn within the ward, no jewellery except wedding rings and I.D badges must be worn.

Lomond Ward is a mixed 30 bedded acute psychiatric admission unit for the under 65 age group. The ward has four six bedded bays, four side rooms and two observation rooms. The side rooms are used by those individuals who require a lower stimulus environment to aid their recovery and the observation rooms are predominantly used for more intense support and observation of patients.

Lomond Ward provides a therapeutic environment for patients experiencing an acute psychiatric illness or disorder. Patients can be admitted for a period of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation working towards their optimum level of functioning and independence.

We treat and care for individuals with a variety of mental health needs including psychosis, depression, anxiety, drug/alcohol related issues, schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Our interventions include a range of activities such as stress management, relaxation, and physical exercise as well as pharmacological and psychological intervention. At present we are working on the intervention Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). The “Mind to Mind” course which is based on ACT is being run in partnership with the clinical psychology department and all staff are being trained in this.

Patients may be referred in various ways:

·  General Practitioners

·  Following a domiciliary visit by psychiatrists

·  Following assessment during an out-patient appointment with a psychiatrist

·  Community Psychiatric Nurse

·  Weston Day Hospital

·  As a transfer from another hospital.

·  Police (Place of Safety – mental health assessment)

·  Unscheduled Care Team

Medical care in the ward is provided by:

Dr Carey Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Reid Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Fee Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Stewart Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Aziz Consultant Psychiatrist

Lomond is also very proactive in teaching students and we run a programme of teaching sessions on a Friday afternoon. These sessions are open to all students in the hospital and there is a wide range of topics delivered by professionals from across the various disciplines.
