Compensation: $18.00-$23.00/hour, depending upon experience, includes health and retirement benefits, paid holidays and sick time

The Wild Rivers Community Foundation serves as the backbone organization for the Building Healthy Communities Initiative, a place-based initiative supported by The California Endowment, directed at improving the health and well-being of Del Norte County and the Adjacent Tribal Lands through systems and policy change driven by residents and collaborative partnerships; and the Aspen Opportunity Youth Initiative, a collective impact effort that brings cross-sector stakeholders together to improve education and employment outcomes for disconnected opportunity youth.

Job Description

The Building Healthy Communities Initiative (BHC) Youth Media Coordinator will provide programmatic oversight and project coordination for BHC related youth produced media publications, school and community based outreach and trainings. This role will design and implement a system of channels for youth media to be housed, identifying levels of editorial controls and journalistic professionalism needed at varying stages. To foster safe spaces for young people’s creative expression, outreach includes recruiting mentors and seeking out learning opportunities for young people to connect regionally and statewide as well as conducting local campaigns and trainings. Responsibilities include, mentoring youth media recruits and serve as advisor for the weekly groups meeting to review each other’s work. This role will coordinate and support a variety of media projects simultaneously; including direct connection to larger BHC initiatives and campaigns. They will engage with a range of diverse people and organizations; and will provide excellent project management and raise up youth voice to change the narrative, grow youth leadership, build local organizational capacity with an emphasis on equity in the areas of Youth Leadership and Employment, Education, Health and Food.

We seek applicants who are professional, extremely organized, self-starters who thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy working with teens and community members at all levels of technological abilities. A successful candidate will be well versed in current Digital Media Technologies, including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite, Social Media Platforms and Website Management and be confident in application as well as teaching. Schedule may include some weekends, evenings and out of town travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in communication, journalism and/or digital media
  • 2 years of experience working or volunteering with youth development programming which has provided the individual with the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed below:

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

◦Experience with and comfort learning new technology equipment such as editing software, cameras, video/audio-recording, storing and management of digital files.

◦Experience and comfort using the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.)

◦Ability to work the hours required for this position, and is both a punctual and reliable

◦Ability to maintain professional work standards and provide a safe environment for youth and community partners.

◦Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population, is able to establish and maintain working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and has demonstrated sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences

◦Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and takes initiative in problem solving

◦Organizes time wisely and prioritizes workloads to meet deadlines in a busy office environment

◦Experience in project management with team of youth and community agencies

◦Excellent written and verbal communication skills

◦Handles interactions with creativity and diplomacy

◦Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive information in accordance with organizational standards

◦Demonstrates ability to develop and edit creative content such as fliers, posters, public service announcements and press releases

◦Ability to stay current on youth issues and think strategically on messaging and storytelling

◦Willingness to follow existing policies and procedures and ability to create, learn, adapt to, and track new systems and procedures

◦Possession of a valid driver’s license, access to a car and current auto insurance

Preferred Qualifications

◦Equivalent to three to five years past experience in youth related programming

◦Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism or digital media

◦Proficiency with computer skills and technical knowledge including comfort with adobe creative suite, final cut, aftereffects and/or other digital editing software platforms.

◦Bilingual proficiency preference (Spanish, Hmong, Tolowa, Yurok and/or other native languages)

◦Knowledge about local community resources

◦Knowledgeable about nonprofit budgeting, fundraising and grant writing

◦Experience with risk management regarding youth related programming and volunteers

◦Volunteer management or coordination experience

◦Community event and/or camp coordination and logistics experience

◦Mentoring/coaching experience

◦Social media campaign building experience

◦Familiarity with foundations and philanthropy

◦Competence in working with Native American, Latino, Hmong, youth and rural communities

Physical and Mental Requirements of Job

All job functions listed above involve to a greater or lesser degree the following physical and mental demands: close vision, hearing/listening, clear complete speech, finger & hand dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting; must be able to lift 25 lbs. to support community activities; complex speaking, reading, writing, clerical, perception/comprehension, exceptional judgment and decision making skills.
