Central District Youth Coordinator – Substance Use Prevention

Medical Care Development, Inc. (MCD), a nonprofit health services organization in collaboration with Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA), is accepting applications for a Project Coordinator: Youth Programing. This position integrates the District Youth Coordinatorrole for the Central Public Health District (Kennebec and Somerset Counties)with supporting youth focused substance misuse prevention programs. The District Youth Coordinator (DYC) supports youth engagement programs and initiatives that build young people’s resilience and strengthen youth leadership on issues of public health and social justice.

The District Youth Coordinator (DYC) is responsible for forming and leading a public health youth policy board; supporting school and community-based youth leadership groups; and co-facilitating youth-adult partnership trainings with Maine Youth Action Network’s (MYAN) statewide staff. The DYCliaises with the Central District Coordinating Council, school districts, and youth-serving community partners.

This full-time,non-exempt, 40 hour per week position requires some evening and weekend hours. Thirty hours per week are dedicated to the DYC role and 10 hours to implementing other prevention efforts. This position isavailable immediately and is eligible for MCD’s benefit package.

This position is located at the HCCA office in Gardiner and is a grant-funded position with potential for renewal. The DYC is a member of HCCA’s prevention team. This position requires experience working with youth, knowledge of positive youth development, keen attention to detail and follow through, the ability to educate and facilitate groups of all ages, knowledge and experience in information dissemination through social media and other communications channels. The position requires that grant deliverables and expectations, including evaluation and data collection requirements, are met.

Competencies among successful candidates are expected to be consistent with those identified by the Public Health Foundation Council on Linkages as Level II. This position requires flexibility and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks with little supervision. A valid Maine driver’s license and reliable transportation are necessary. Travel expenses are reimbursed.

Successful applicants will be energetic, self-starters who are able to function comfortably in a team environment and independently and relate well to co-workers, schools, organizations, youth, and the public. A Bachelor’s degree in community health, education, or health-related field along with a minimum of 1 year of experience in youth engagement and empowerment is preferred. Candidates with three to five years of experience in youth engagement and empowerment may also be considered. Interest in becoming a Certified Prevention Specialist is a plus. Exceptional writing, proficient interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrated cultural competence are essential.
