Policies

This is a hybrid course, which means that class time will be limited, and you will be expected to do much of the course work on your own time. Normally, a 3-credit course in summer would have to meet for about 2.5 hours, twice a week, for 8 weeks. We will meet for 3hours, once a week, for 5weeks. Because the class is small, I will dispose with typical class structure. There will be a number of reaction assignments posted that will require you to read something that is posted at another web site, or that was posted by me. Your will respond to these from home via email. There will also be a “scavenger hunt” (you will asked to track down and identify original passages—there will be more about this assignment later). The only assessment mechanism that is typical is the final exam. The final exam, given the last class day, will be a multiple-choice exam. This exam is designed to ensure that you read the text.

Your grade will be computed on a straight 10-point scale, where 90-100 is an “A”, 80-89 is a “B”, 7-79 is a “C”, and so on. This is the formula I will use:

Final exam – 15%

Attendance – 5%

Scavenger Hunt – 20%

Written Assignments – 60%

Class time will be used for discussion, and as a time for me to tell some stories.
