Current Events: The children looked really nice for our class picture on Tuesday. We will be sending conference information home soon for Feb. 16, and 17th. If you cannot make either of these dates, I will be happy to do a phone conference or arrange a time that better suits your schedule.

Language Arts: This week the children have learned about the editing marks that I (and all teachers) will use to mark mistakes in their writing. We did our first Daily Editing sentence to find the mistakes and mark with the editing marks and then re-wrote the sentence correctly. I’ve attached a copy of the editing marks to this letter so that you can know and assist your child with the mechanics of writing, which we are learning in school.

Math: We have been making and comparing groups of tens and ones, using manipulatives to make the numbers that we’ve named, We have moved to the representational level of marking the groups of 10 on paper, writing the groups of tens and ones, and then showing the expanded notation of the math sentence. For example: 3 tens and 5 ones is 35 (called expanded notation), which is the same as they symbols: 30 + 5 = 35. Playing place value Tic-Tac-Toe, the children made their number with base ten blocks and then compared amounts with their partner.

Social Studies: In our Scholastic News: “How Kids Changed the World,” we continued to learning about the difference between segregation and integration. We read about how a little 7 year old girl and her friends used sit-ins to change the segregation rules in Oklahoma, and what we could possibly do to help in the world.

Science: With Mrs. Flint, the children have been reading and learning about living and nonliving. Sorting and drawing pictures to identify living and nonliving are skills that they have been learning this week.
