Scripture Readings for November 27, 2016

First Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 2: 1-5: On that day, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” prophesied Isaiah. “One nation shall not raise the sword against another.” He went on: “Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.”

Psalm 122: 1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9: "Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord."

Romans 13:11-14: Paul urged the Romans: “It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Let us put on the “armor of light. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Matthew 24:37-44: Matthew’s Jesus said that the Son of Man will come at an hour no one can expect. Therefore, all people must stay awake, keep a watchful eye, and be prepared.

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

The Christian is misunderstood in the world. In fact, all God’s people throughout all of history have been challenged and persecuted in their struggle to fulfill the Father’s Will in their lives. This misunderstanding and persecution stem from the reality that God’s ways are not the ways of the world. It is only in Him, and not in the world that “…all things exist…all things are held together.”

Jesus and His life among us were no different. In His Coming among us to proclaim the Kingdom, He suffered much persecution and misunderstanding. Jesus’ crucifixion was misinterpreted as a horrible end suffered by an enemy of the state. However, the crucifixion was Jesus was His ultimate moment of glory for through the eyes of faith and the reality of the Divine Plan; Jesus’ crucifixion was not a humiliating defeat but the revelation of His reigning from His royal throne of victory.

How do we persevere in our living out the Christian life and how do we fulfill the plan of God in our lives? Do we fold under pressure? Do we choose only those things that are easy? The life of a subject of Christ the King’s is not meant to be easy if we desire to share the eternal victory with Him in heaven. We must be ready and willing to suffer as our King suffered and to die as our King died in order to live with Him in His Kingdom. May we live always as faithful subjects of our King, recognizing that it is not the ways of the world that gives life and hope but through living out our lives as Jesus did: focused on fulfilling the will of the Father.

I wish to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving Day. We have much to be grateful for. Let us be mindful, and especially on this Thanksgiving Day, that everything we have is a gift from God and we should be grateful for all of the graces and blessings He has bestowed upon us. Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated at Holy Rosary at 7:30 a.m. In observation of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, the Parish Office will be closed this Thursday and Friday. There will be no morning Mass this Friday.

I wish to express my gratitude to those of the parishes of Holy Rosary and St. Stephen for the planning of preparation for this past week’s Parish Mission and the receptions. I am especially grateful to the members of the Holy Rosary Parish Stewardship Committee for coordinating this event. I also am appreciative to those of you who expressed a warm welcome to Fr. Gielow during his stay. This was a wonderful Parish Mission. May each of us continue to grow in our relationship with God and with each other.
