IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FUTURE 6TH GRADERS

Dear 5th Grade Parents:

As we continue the 2015-16 school year, we would like to make you aware of an exciting opportunity. Beginning today and continuing through February 5th, fifth graders will be choosing the type of music class they wish to take for next year. These options include Band, Choir, Comprehensive Music, and Orchestra. Comprehensive Music is designed as a non-performance class while Band, Choir and Orchestra perform. All groups are designed to develop music appreciation and literacy through reading, playing and listening skills.

Band

All band students begin by choosing a woodwind instrument (flute or clarinet) or a brass instrument (trumpet or trombone). Students develop proper technique for their chosen instrument and learn to perform in an ensemble setting. Opportunities to change to other band instruments will be considered as the year progresses. Parents must obtain an instrument and supplies for their student to be in Band. The school district does not provide instruments.

Choir

In choir, emphasis is placed on developing vocal strength, musicality, and healthy use of the voice while working collaboratively to perform quality choral music in an ensemble setting.

Orchestra

Orchestra students may choose one of four stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Orchestra students develop proper technique for their chosen instrument and learn to perform in an ensemble setting. Parents must obtain an instrument and supplies for their student to be in Orchestra. The school district does not provide instruments.

Comprehensive Music

Studies in Comprehensive Music can be categorized into five main areas: music reading, music composition and improvisation, study of world music, study of musical styles, and music appreciation/music history.

Each of these options provides an opportunity for your child to continue to grow in their music skills during 6th grade. Regardless of the music choice, your child will receive music instruction twice a week for 45 minutes.

The Music Choice Sheet for the 2016-17 school year is attached. The simplest way to complete the information is online using the website listed at the tip of the choice sheet. Or you may fill out the attached sheet and return it to your music teacher. Either way, please make your choice by Feb. 5th. We hope you and your child will begin discussing these options since it involves a commitment to a full year of music instruction in their chosen class.

Best Regards,

Allen ISD Elementary Music Department
