2015 MAYBORN MULTIMEDIA HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

UNT’s School of Journalism will host a summer multimedia high school workshop July 17-23, 2015 in collaboration with the nation’s Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. All student participants selected must attend the entire Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference in Grapevine, Texas, and the five-day residential workshop to be held on the UNT campus. The project will give students hands-on experience in storytelling in a multimedia world at one of the nation’s leading journalism programs. UNT’s Mayborn School of Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Students will have daily news quizzes and be exposed to media professionals. The ultimate goal is for students to produce a multimedia website, news articles, online photo galleries, blogs and broadcast news packages related to the theme. Students also will use social media tools for newsgathering, be exposed to a variety of journalism, advertising and public relations career paths as well as media ethics.

QUALIFICATIONS

This workshop is open to junior and senior high school students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and an interest in storytelling. Students must write a cover letter and 400-word essay explaining why they would like to participate in the workshop. Please attach your high school transcript to the application. Applications are due April 15, 2015. Participants will be notified by May 15, 2015 by email.

COURSE SCHEDULE

Friday, July 17 – Check-in followed by reception with Young Spurs

Saturday, July 18 – Attend Mayborn Conference and Literary Lights Dinner

Sunday, July 19 – Attend Mayborn Conference and tour UNT

Monday, July 20 – Storytelling workshop plus movie night

Tuesday, July 21 – Multimedia production plus field trip to media outlets

Wednesday, July 22 – Multimedia production, including resume critique

Thursday, July 23 – Multimedia production, critique session and closing awards lunch

Students who participate in the program will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the workshop. All meals and on-campus housing are covered. Selected students must be committee to participate for the entire program
