Pre-Cutting Instructions

It is a privilege and an honor for me to join you at Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company as you create your Amazon Star masterpiece! Here is the honest truth about this project:

There is a LOT of cutting

My quilt has won several “Best of Show” awards…..it is worth it!

Overview of cutting:

Judy takes you through several steps:

1.  Label your fabrics Color #1, Color #2, etc. (I use sticky address labels)

2.  Paper clip the newsprint templates that are needed to cut each fabric to that fabric.

(Note: There are no newsprint templates for the Lone Star strips… you just cut strips) (p. 3)

3.  Cut each fabric into strips in a variety of widths. Definition: A strip is cut from selvage to selvage (42” wide). The width of the strip might be small (3-1/4” x 42 ) or large (15-1/2” x 42”). Each strip is then paper clipped to one of the templates that you clipped to that fabric is step 2. (p. 4-12).

4.  Each strip of fabric is then cut, using the template you’ve clipped to it. After this cutting is done, the pieces are placed into a zip-loc bag which you will number (Bag #1 – Bag #9).

If you are comfortable with Judy’s designs, my suggestion is to dive in and just begin cutting. Take it page by page and step by step. Cutting starts on page 2 and continues through page 12. Beware: There are “left” and “right” pieces on a number of units (mirror images of each other), and Judy directs you to cut left and rights separately. This is especially important if you are using a single sided fabric.

If you have never cut a “Judy” quilt before, or find the cutting directions confusing….no worries! Just cut the strips that you’ll use for the Lone Star points. I can help you cut the rest of the quilt during class. You’ll find a “cheat sheet” attached that will help you cut the Lone Star strips.

I’ve also included a fabric placement information sheet. Hopefully you will find it helpful! If you like to use colored pencils to play with your colors, Judy has provided a line drawing on page 26.
