SCHEDULE: Expected schedule is - Monday 7am -11am; Wednesday 7am-11am; Friday 7am – 11am; Saturday 7-10am

WAGE/BENEFITS: Beginning wage is $9.75 /hour. Ineligible for benefits except those required by law.

Position Summary:

Village Market is a non-profit, community-designed and operated, healthy corner grocery store in the heart of New Columbia in North Portland. Village Market strives to build community, promote health, offer fresh and healthy produce, grocery and prepared food items. Village Market has been operating for 6 years and is an exciting opportunity to work for a growing business in the dynamic North Portland community.

The Kitchen Assistant position will be responsible for a full range of activities within the kitchen, including: daily preparation of Village Market prepared food items; quick and efficient fruit, vegetable, baked good preparation; safe use of professional meat slicer, stocking shelves and rotating kitchen inventory; tagging items and making signs; assisting with special events i.e. catering; washing and sanitizing dishes; supporting the prepared foods deli program; and maintaining a safe and positive environment in the market.

Education and Experience:

A typical background for the person who can fulfill the duties of this position is as follows:

·  Experience working in a grocery store, or in preparing and handling food, or in a related retail business with continuous customer contact

·  Experience safely preparing food in a speedy manner – high production speed is essential to this position.

·  Experience with and understanding of the cultural traditions, norms and histories of urban African American, Latino and/or African Immigrant communities. Personal life experience and networks will be valued.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·  Must value and demonstrate respect to diverse cultural groups and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

·  Excellent customer service skills, including display of friendliness, helpfulness and patience while assisting customers.

·  Able to communicate effectively and to read and understand English.

·  Must demonstrate quick execution of all kitchen tasks – be able to stick to a schedule

·  Must be able to self manage and be successfully autonomous in kitchen tasks

·  Ability to follow directions.

·  Knowledge of the neighborhood and it diverse cultural groups.

·  Be able to exercise tact, discretion and good judgment in working with a variety of people.

·  Be able to work effectively as part of a team, helping out co-workers when needed

·  Be able to do weekly ordering and purchasing with partnering vendors

·  Maintain appropriate professional boundaries in working with others and handling confidential information.

·  Open to feedback and supervision.

·  Willing to continuously learn and willing to ask for support and help.

·  Knowledge of or experience with preparing fresh, healthy food.

·  Basic math skills, including common kitchen conversions

·  Be able to work and be punctual for scheduled shifts and be in a condition suitable for assuming the responsibilities of position.

·  Ability to stand for long periods of time.

·  Ability to lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.

Other Requirements:

·  Must pass criminal history background check

·  Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid food handlers certificate

·  Attend and participate in training regarding proper use, maintenance, and cleaning of slicing equipment and adhere to all usage requirements.

·  Driving is not required for this position. However, any employee who drives a vehicle during work hours, regardless of whether a Janus or personal vehicle, must complete the Agency’s driving approval process prior to driving for work.

Working Conditions:

·  Work is performed in a small grocery-store environment and is scheduled in response to specific activities and customer availability and requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and early mornings on a frequent basis
