Graduation Requirements,Texas Ready, Tests and Standards
The 2006 – 2007 Freshmen students who graduate as Texas Scholars will be Texas Ready. Students must meet the graduation requirements of the Recommended High School Program as well as earn one math credit above Algebra II to be a Texas Scholar graduate. In addition, students will have to demonstrate by their performance on one of several standardized tests that they are ready to:
– Begin a college or university education without the need for development coursework,
– Enter any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces; or
– Enter the job market with the skills that can lead to a viable career.
Students may satisfy this requirement by their performance on one of several Texas Ready Assessments. Performance on tests at earlier grades are an important predictor of whether or not students are “on track” to be Texas Ready when they graduate from high school.
College Readiness Assessments
Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)
11th Grade TAKS – a 2200 on the math test and 2200 on the English-language arts test with a sub-score of 3 on the writing sample.
College Entrance Tests
ACT – a composite score of 23 and at least 19 on the English section and 22 on the mathematics section
SAT – a combined score of 1070 and at least a 500 on both the verbal and mathematics sections
College Placement Tests
These tests are used by public colleges and universities in Texas to place entering students in appropriate courses. Students achieving at or above the indicated scores are exempt from developmental course work.
ACCUPLACER – Elementary Algebra – 63, Reading Comprehension – 78, and Written Essay – 6 or [Written Essay – 5 and Sentence Skills – 80]
ASSET – Elementary Algebra – 38, Reading Skills – 41, and Written Essay – 6 or [Written Essay – 5 and Writing Skills (multiple choice) – 40]
COMPASS – Algebra – 39, Reading Skills – 81, and Written Essay – 6 or [Written Essay – 5 and Writing Skills
(multiple choice) – 59]
THEA – Mathematics 230 (Note: 270 is the college algebra readiness standard), Reading – 230, and Writing – 220
Military Readiness Assessment
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
This series of tests is used as an entrance requirement by the various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Scores are also used to qualify recruits for certain occupational opportunities within each branch.
ASVAB – a military entrance score of 40 or better would allow students to enter any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Work Readiness Assessment
WorkKeys - This series of tests by ACT measures the test takers knowledge and skills as required for success in the workplace.
WorkKeys – at least a score of three (3) on the Reading for Information, Locating Information and Applied Mathematics assessments
The Texas Scholars Student Plan for High School and Beyond
The new Texas Scholars – High School and Beyond initiative challenges students to develop and carryout a personal plan for their four years of high school and a transition to college, the workplace, the military or another endeavor of their own choosing.
Beginning with the 2006 – 2007 Freshmen class, the “Student Roadmap for Success” suggests steps students should take each year to develop their plan and prepare for success in and after high school. It includes checklists of activities related to the transition to college, the military or work.SEE YOUR COUNSELOR FOR MORE DETAILS

Texas Scholars’ Program Requirements 2007 – 2008 Freshmen and Beyond
Beginning with the 2007 – 2008 Freshmen class, students who graduate as Texas Scholars must:
• Graduate from high school having completed the Recommended High School Program or
Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP), and
• Complete at least two courses while in high school eligible for college credit.
The college course credit requirement will encourage students to begin post secondary work while still in high school. Some examples of courses eligible for college credit are:
• Advanced Placement (AP) courses (must attempt the AP examination to be considered as an
eligible course for college credit)
• CTE courses leading to a post-secondary certification (must attempt the examination to be
considered eligible for Texas scholar requirement)
• Dual credit / concurrent enrollment courses.
