THE COMMITTEE ON
INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS
To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H.5006) to request that the Department of Transportation name the interchange located at the intersection of Interstate Highway 95 and South Carolina Highway 341 in Sumter County, etc., respectfully
REPORT:
That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:
LISTON D. BARFIELD for Committee.
[5006-1]
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 95 AND SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 341 IN SUMTER COUNTY IN HONOR OF NASCAR RACING LEGEND CALE YARBOROUGH AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “NASCAR RACING LEGEND CALE YARBOROUGH INTERCHANGE”.
Whereas, William Caleb “Cale” Yarborough was born near Timmonsville, South Carolina, on March 27, 1939, the son of Julian and Annie Yarborough; and
Whereas, he and his wife, Betty Jo, are the proud parents of three daughters; and
Whereas, Cale Yarborough is a farmer, businessman, and former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver and owner; and
Whereas, NASCAR has had very few dynasties given the competitive nature of the sport. However, Cale Yarborough’s reign in the 1970’s was one of them; and
Whereas, winning three consecutive Winston Cup Series championships from 19761978 was unprecedented and unattainable until 2008, when Jimmie Johnson was crowned champion for the third consecutive year; and
Whereas, during his threeyear reign, he won twentyeight races, nine in 1976 and 1977, and ten in 1978; and
Whereas, his final points margin in those three years was never fewer than one hundred ninetyfive points, and was four hundred seventyfour points in 1978; and
Whereas, Cale Yarborough totaled eightythree victories in his thirtyone year career, and ranks sixth in total alltime wins; and
Whereas, in 1998, when NASCAR compiled its list of the “50 Greatest Drivers”, William Caleb “Cale” Yarborough was honored as one of NASCAR’S greatest drivers; and
Whereas, in January, 2012, he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize the many accomplishments of this son of South Carolina by naming an interchange along Interstate Highway 95 in Sumter County in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the interchange located at the intersection of Interstate Highway 95 and South Carolina Highway 341 in Sumter County in honor of NASCAR Racing Legend Cale Yarborough and erect appropriate markers or signs at this interchange that contain the words “NASCAR Racing Legend Cale Yarborough Interchange”.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
