OUTDOOR ATHLETIC FACILITY

Directions:

You have been commissioned to create a master plan for an outdoor athletic facility near University Academy. Your boss wants to make sure that all guests will have the greatest experience EVER so she has a few specifications that must be included in your park. Spend 20-30 minutes making a rough draft on scratch paper. Then create your final draft on large graph paper. What you will turn in to be graded:

-Rough draft

-Final draft

-Coordinates & distance worksheet

-Your work from worksheet on separate sheet

Before starting any designing or brainstorming, draw the origin, x-axis and y-axis on your final draft sheet. My advice is to build the big elements first, then fill in the smaller, more flexible aspects of your design. Example: Place your baseball field before your bathrooms. Your design should include the following elements:

-At least one of each of the following outdoor arenas

  • Track
  • Football field
  • Soccer field
  • Softball field
  • Baseball field
  • Pool
  • Sand volleyball court

-3.1 mile trail throughout or around the park (3.1 miles = 5 kilometers)

-Indoor gym facility that is at least 75,000 sq ft for indoor gyms and conditioning

-Concessions at center of park

-Sports shop (equipment rental, athletic gear) near the entrance

-At least four bathroom facilities

  • One near entrance/exit
  • One near center of park

-Three fountains found at the midpoints between (see midpoint worksheet)

  • Football field and outdoor pool
  • Concessions and entrance to park
  • Soccer field and volleyball court

-Information stations @ center and near entrance

-Anything else you can think of!

Your elements may overlap, for example: information station & bathroom facility, sports shop & indoor gym facilitymay happen in the same location Think about what you know about these types of facilities in real life. (In architecture we call this overlapping programming, or double purposing.) This project should show your creativity and imagination!Read all directions carefully before starting.

TECHNICAL DIAGRAMS

Here is some useful information about the size of some sporting fields. Be aware that there is a lot more information on these diagrams than you need. Pay attention to the dimensions on the exterior (most important) to know how much space you need. This will also give you good practice interpreting technical diagrams.

EXEMPLAR FACILITIES

Here are a few exemplar facilities for your inspiration: Ft. Snelling / Nieman Soccer Complex in St. Paul, MN; and Minnetonka High school.Below is an image of Minnetonka High School (my alma mater)

Above: High school athletic complex; baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, football, track. Trail seen along the bottom (park of city system)

Feel free to search for other exemplar facilities on Google Maps. Include anything you use for inspiration.

COORDINATES WORKSHEET

Part A: Coordinates

Identify the location / entrance for each attraction using an ordered pair ( x, y ) . Use your “entrance points” for the identifiable location and fill in the chart below. Label these points, including coordinates, in RED on your final map. If your facilities overlap, choose different parts of the facility to be the “entrance point.” Example: Your soccer field and football field overlap; I choose mid-field to be the “entrance point” for my soccer field whereas the end zone is the “entrance point” for my football field.

Location / Coordinates
Track
Football field
Soccer field
Softball field
Baseball field
Pool
Sand volleyball court
3.1 mile trail
Indoor gym facility
Concessions
Bathroom 1
(entrance)
Bathroom 2
(center)
Fountain 1
Fountain 2
Fountain 3
Entrance to park

Part B: Midpoint

Calculate the midpoint from each of the following locations. Use the coordinate points you found in part A and the midpoint formula to fill in the chart below with the ordered pair ( x , y ). Mark your midpoints on your final map with a RED dot. Show ALL of your work on a separate sheet of paper.

Midpoint formula:

Football field to Outdoor pool (location of Fountain 1) / Concessions to Entrance (location of Fountain 2) / Soccer field to Volleyball (location of Fountain 3)
Entrance to Track / Entrance to Football field / Entrance to Soccer field
Softball field to Fountain 2 / Indoor gym to Entrance / Bathroom 1 to Pool
Bathroom 2 to Track / Volleyball to Concessions / Trail to Fountain 1

Part C: Distance

Using the distance formula, find the total distance between each park destination given by the chart below. Show ALL of your work on a separate sheet of paper.

Distance formula:

Football field to Outdoor pool (location of Fountain 1) / Concessions to Entrance (location of Fountain 2) / Soccer field to Volleyball (location of Fountain 3)
Entrance to Track / Entrance to Football field / Entrance to Soccer field
Softball field to Fountain 2 / Indoor gym to Entrance / Bathroom 1 to Pool
