AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS - CENTRAL FLORIDA CHAPTER

THE NEWS CIPHER

September 2010

CFAGO.org

From the Dean:

Dear Colleagues:

The Central Florida Chapter, AGO begins the 2011-2012 season with an outstanding kick-off event on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. I hope with the earlier announcement of this event you have already made plans to attend. Yearbooks will be issued in addition to a leaflet containing many resources available for you to secure free organ music.

This event and the others throughout the season are for your benefit, helping you grow and thrive in your profession. Fred Mauk and Thomas DeWitt will lead us in a choral anthem and organ literature reading session. With most choir seasons having just begun, I know Fred will have a packet of music that will have something for everyone to add to their planned programs. Tom will share with us many organ selections that will be useful in our worship and concert schedules for the current season. It is a chance for you to hear the literature, as so many times we see something and then when it arrives, it is less than expected. Personally, I have selected things from both Fred and Tom's programs after hearing the selections sung or played in their respective churches.

With fun, food and fellowship planned for this event, please don't miss it! And, as in all of our events of the season, there is no charge, whatever the venue, unless it is listed specifically in our chapter calendar.

We are literally pulling out “all the stops” with the new season's events. About a year ago we all had the opportunity to share in a long survey in evaluating and writing comments about our local chapter. The many responses gave us an idea of the direction in which we need to move considering the diversity of our membership. The CFAGO has been seen and known in the Orlando area since 1926, though in the early years we were known by a different name. We still promote excellence in superb performances, a variety of events that will inspire, energize and gratify us through hearing new and unusual choral and organ repertoire, and a program for mutual support, education and certification. The new calendar fulfills all these ideas. We have events on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with some in the morning, noon, afternoon and evening. There are seven recitals, four events of interest to choral directors, an organ crawl to Tampa with theater and church organs, an opportunity for you to learn new skills, an exposure of the organ for young people, master class of interest to all members at any skill level, a family night to see and hear a silent film with organ accompaniment, meet an organ designer/builder, share your talent in a community opportunity, as well as a holiday party for you to attend

All of February is “Excellence in Organ Month.” I hope that all organists will participate in this. Look in the calendar and see how all of this is going to happen. Just a thought – maybe you'll find just the right organ piece by attending the choral and organ reading session on September 21. See you at the dinner prepared by the host church at 6:00 p.m..

A note from the News Cipher Editor:

Please send your 2010-2011 concert series information to me as you confirm dates and times. I will add the information as received.

If you would be so kind as to have your secretary, one of the choir members, friend or family member type the concerts in Microsoft Word in the proper newsletter format, it would help me so much.

Please copy the format from one of the concert listings in the newsletter when you send information. This will help tremendously in compiling The News Cipher.

Note from our Registrar

Hi everyone,
You should have just received your AGO renewal form. The form I sent was the standard form from National AGO, and unfortunately does not included some of the personalized info that our chapter includes, such as your category: (Organist/director/ handbells/flutist etc,;) and it doesn't have a space for you to include your volunteer abilities such as playing in members' recital/ ushering at events/hospitality/ yearbook/ clean up... etc; as well as your availability for Funerals/Weddings/ Services.
If at all possible, when you fill out the form I sent you, could you please indicate:

1. Category (Organist/ Director/ etc)
2. Your availability for Services/Weddings/Funerals
3. Your AGO certification if you have any
4. Any help you can give to the chapter
Or if you prefer, you can download the form from our website and it will have all those questions on it for you already.
So sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks so much!
